I actually have a Manilow and a Marie story :)
My Uncle was the president of our local stadium. He's a totally useless person except, when we were kids, we got tickets to just about everything (he wouldn't let me see Prince). Anyway, he got me and my Mom tickets to Manilow and, for the first time ever, I begged to be allowed to go back stage to meet him.
He flat out refused. I was heartbroken. My kid brother got to meet Phil Collins - I wanted to meet Barry! My Mom, when I was older, explained that my Uncle told her that what goes on back stage at a Manilow concert puts most hard rockers to shame. It was basically a non-stop parade of young men coming to, um, pay homage to the Bar. My 12 year old self was denied.
Ok - Marie, not such a big deal. A former friend was huge into Marie's dolls (they scared the shit out of me). So into it that every time Marie would come into town to appear on QVC, she'd go and sit in the audience for hours on end. My friend was quite artistic and took a few of the miniture dolls and made a little house for them and personalized it for Marie's kids and gave it to her. After that they were fast friends. From everything I heard, Marie was a very sweet lady.

She really is -- Hello, Julie, btw. Welcome to the weirdest thread on the net! The first time I met Marie, I proposed to her. She said, "I'm already married." (This was right before the "annulment".) I replied, "That's okay. You're a mormon. You can have more than one."
She laughed and said, "I'm afraid it doesn't work that way."
We we friends after that.
They were show-biz folks, so they got it about theatre people. They were friendly, but careful, VERY square, but earnest. They understood that behavior would be wild around them, but they wore blinders made by religion.

Thanks for the welcome but I don't find the thread weird at all (but hey - I live with Marc so my weird meter is a bit off... ha ha).

Wow, is this the fastest growing thread on the net or something? I'm offline a few days and when 'I return this thread is about a 100 pages longer (so I exaggerate a bit, please DON'T sue me).
Anyways, catching up...
Al wrote: "The hate thread has finally(!) been locked, Jodi. Maybe there is a god after all."
My temporary absence seems (as far as I know) to have left me in the dark concerning what the hate thread was (and not a bit sorry about that, frankly), but I'd say you're very unfair, Al, attributing the good work of our gracious host or vigilant mods as a possible evidence for the existence of a god. ;)
Tom wrote: "Well, I'm a pig -- but not a pig-MAN, if you know what I mean..."
*humming quietly* "Spider-Pig, Spider-Pig..."
Tom also wrote: "Brian -- they're called 'Lavender Elite' cards, but they'll get you in to most clubs."
Um, so will those cards be coming in the mail or... ;)
Apropos of the title discussion – Mr, Mrs, etc – it's very different here in Sweden. We're more casual in some sense, so first names are thrown around quite freely, which means it's sometimes quite jarring shifting languages if writing or recieving formal or official letters and the like. Can still remember the first time I recieved a refusal note from en English language magazine or publisher (don't remember if it was US or UK at the mo) and finding myself adressed as "Mr. Jahlmar", as opposed to the Swedish ones I'd recieved prior to it, in which I was always just "Joakim".
Marc F. wrote: "I've found myself trying to throw love back out into the universe of late. Admittedly, it's snarky love, but ya gotta start somewhere.
Example: A couple of weeks ago my wife, son and I went up to Manhattan to visit a couple of friends and went to Central Park so Dylan could play and run around. Walking back to their apartment, along Central Park West and 86th, this crazy bitch comes riding along on her bike, on the sidewalk, nearly runs into me and has the temerity to call me a fat something (didn't quite get the rest of it, but 'fat' was plenty clear). David, one of our friends, turns and as she rides off, starts yelling at her for riding on the sidewalk...me, I turn and yell, 'I love you, too, lady!'"
Thanks, Marc. Gave me a good chuckle that did. :)
Al wrote: "'And there are more like us everyday!'
Hmm. I read that as 'And I like us more everyday!'
Maybe my needy side is showing through... I'm good enough. I'm smart enough. And doggone it, Geoff Gibson likes me!"
Could be, Al, or it might just be an indication that glasses are needed. ;)
Brian wrote: "Every board needs a couple of threads like this...goodwill, cameraderie, fun, and on occasion...just plain silliness."
Indeed! As the years move along, I often get the feeling I'm "evolving" into a misanthrope. This thread is most definitely becoming a very potent anti-dote which I probably should be injecting daily for hope about the human species. In short, may it never end!
Tom wrote: "Cruise is such a homo -- makes me mad that he takes such pains to hide it, like it would really affect his career at this point. I think that if he WAS honest, people would be a lot more comfortable with him."
Are Scientologist "allowed" to be gay?
JB wrote: "I know you're kidding, but I was surprised when Liberace was Outed. I mean, come on! He was so over-the-top (when it was not 'safe' to be so) I was sure it was all part of his act."
There must surely be something to that old saying about hiding in plain sight being a great camouflage method. As this would seem to indicate.
Al wrote: "Brian Talley; gimp"
Now I'm just getting Pulp Fiction in my head... "Bring out the gimp!"
Oh, and a big JBF welcome to Mrs Foxx! (o come on, with a name like that, how could I go for just Julie, right?) Hope you'll enjoy these parts!
