Okay. I have a question for all the gay JBFers out there:
Was there something about comic books that appealed to you as a gay young person? I'm talking about elements that specifically spoke to or appealed to you as a gay person. Was it the presentation of idealized male physiques in skin-tight costumes? Was it the sense of people struggling with being different (a la the X-Men)? Was it the hope that there were people out there who were going to be good and decent and heroic and stand up for what's right and fight for you no matter what?
Was there anything about comics that appealed to you specifically as a gay person?

Late to this game, my mom used to call me "Marco Polo Shirt", which lead to me being called "Marco". By my teenage years I had gotten uncomfortable with that and luckily moved away to a completely different area and was able to drop the "o" with little difficulty. I still have a couple of old friends who will forget and call me "Marco".

Well, Al, I remember when I was around 13 and I was reading a New Mutants special drawn by Arthur Adams. In one page Doug Ramsey is talking about the cruel jokes kid made at school about mutants, and that he was afraid to confront them and tell them he was one of those mutants they were mocking. By 13 I had already heard lots of bad comments about gays, and in that moment I just fell completely identified with that mutant character. There were other things that appealed to me but that's a story for another time.

Anyone seen The Kids Are Alright? I was pretty interested in it, but now I'm reading that Julianne Moore's character, who is a lesbian, has an affair with the sperm donor for her and her wife's kids, and I have no interest in the "lesbians just need a good dicking" stereotype. Anyone got the skinny on this?

Troops surveyed okay with gays in the militarySo much for the "it'll hurt morale" excuse, what's next?

Al, I admit that part of my love of comic books was seeing the muscular male form. There were some artists on the LEGION who got Lightining Lad's package JUST right, if you know what I mean... Now, as a kid, I didn't recognize that as a sex-thing, just that there was something VERY intriguing about it. And those Mike Grell LEGION costumes... I'm just saying... But I think the same is true for straight boys. I mean, I knew the girl's costumes were on the same level, but it didn't have the same affect on me. I enjoyed reading them more. The hot bods were part of it, but I loved the stories more.

Some of JB's X-Men stuff was pure cheesecake for me. Storm in The Savage Land made my pants fit funny at times.

I know what you mean about the costumes on the women. My mother would make the comment "is it part of their power to be able to fit into such skimpy outfits?" To which I'd reply "no, but it sure is a great bonus!"

And that defined an interesting dichotemy to me, Jeremiah. The women's costumes were always skimpy, yet the men's costumes rarely showed skin -- one of the reasons i liked the Grell LEGION so much.

True, Tom. In a fight, the men's costumes would have a few tears to indicate battle damage and the women's costumes seemed to always be torn in the more revealing areas of their attire.
