What if you asked and told while it was not in place?

Then you can be prosecuted, Brad.  There were several warnings from the DoD to hold off on coming out until a final decision was made.  Now, whether they actually prosecute or not until this is sorted out is another question altogether -- personally, I suspect they won't.

I've done this before, but let's play substitution.  If the law said, African-Americans aren't allowed to serve their country, would there be this much controversy?  I think everyone would very quickly see how ridiculous and prejudiced this law is.

But, Tom, African-Americans wouldn't be liable to check out their brothers in arms in the shower.  And we all know homosexuality is contagious, right?  ;)

Seriously though, I think there are things here that reverberate quite strongly with the struggle to allow women to enlist as well... only, here it's not quite as easy to tell that somebody belongs to the category, unless said somebody tells someone that that is the case.

Ah well, silly, silly, silly, whichever way one looks at it.

Yes, yes, Jeremiah, I understand your desperate attempt at trying to repress the fact that Canada and Sweden are filled with gorgeous women and that you're neither there nor here, so I won't hold that last comment against you.  ;)

Thanks for not holding my pettiness against me, Joakim, you're a real mensch! ;-)

The real problem with gays in the army ... is it that mere camaradery is the calculated limit of emotional intimacy that enable soldiers to perform optimally in combat situations ... and that forming romantic interests is counteroptimal (is that a word)?

Or is it that military leaders are worried that their troops would rather make love than war once the party got started?

I don't know, Jesus.  Let's ask the Spartans.

"The real problem with gays in the army..."

There is no good way to finish this sentence without revealing either idiocy or prejudice.

You understand the Devil's Advocate approach to illustrating absurdity in stances such as "don't ask don't tell", right?
