Update from the AP:

>>A federal judge who halted the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gays is holding a hearing Monday before she decides whether the policy can be enforced while the government appeals. [...] President Barack Obama has said he wants the law repealed in Congress, rather than addressed in a court.<<

I didn't know that was Obama's position. And if Congress gets weak-kneed and refuses to repeal it?

And if Congress gets weak-kneed and refuses to repeal it?

Then I think Obama gets his way -- his secret way.  He can pretend he stood for gay rights all along, but this way he doesn't have to take the blame for a decision someone else makes.  It's weak and spineless and what I've come to expect out of him over the last year or so.

In point of fact, this IS a decision for the courts.  It's an unconstitutional law.  Period.

Tom,

The man can't even veto a piece of legislation with conviction.

Does Obama speaking out on the It Gets Better site help?

Standing outside of the issue, and rooting for the man, I think that Obama appealed DOMA so that it could be taken to the highest authority, in this case Congress, so that the issue could be put to rest and no one could try to appeal that final decision.

I of course have nothing to back this up other than instinct, but I have faith that he is trying to do the right and best thing, and get rid of any law that upholds this stupid bigotry.

That was a right pretty speech.  If only someone who can make a speech like that could get into a position of power...

Part of me thinks he wants to do it in the most sober, deliberative way.  Anyone can cut the Gordian knot, Obama wants to unravel them.

But more and more I share Tom's cynicism.  Obama doesn't seem to know how to gain political capital, which makes him all the more desperate not to spend it.

To me, it's as if he doesn't want to take responsiblity.  He wants health-care overhaul, but he just hands it over to congress and doesn't guide or push them at all.  He wants the repeal of DADT, but he fights it because he thinks it should be decided by the congress.

I think it's because he's preparing for failure.  If health care failed, he could blame congress.  If DADT doesn't get repealed, he can blame congress.

Hillary has given more rights to same-sex couples that work in the Secretary of State in this years...her "it get's better" message was more convincing thatn Obama's.

Shame....

Obama should have just said "it gets better, until you want to serve your country." since that seems to be his stance.
