Hey, question for everyone:  how do you manage to work with, remain acquainted with, or even be friends with someone who is homophobic?

I'd have to say for me it's not that hard. Most jobs I've had either I was out or as close to being out as possible. I've had co-workers who started out being homophobic and now aren't because they got to know me and other gay co-workers better and realized we're just like anybody else.

As for friends... seeing as 80% of my friends are gay AND we can choose our friends I've had no problems there.

Even though I haven't had that problem I think having an homophobic relative is probably much harder to deal with than an homophobic co-worker.

Oh, don't be such a drama queen, Jodi.  That kind of colourful behaviour belongs centre stage, down the street in the neighbourhood theatre.

Confronting homophobes is AWESOME.  I get so few chances to feel superior.

I'd say it all depends on the context and how the homophobia manifests itself.  I think in a lot of cases, one might not even spot a milder case with cursory acquaintance for instance, because chances are, the whole issue of homosexuality might not come up (especially not for someone like myself who isn't gay, i.e. the issue wouldn't necessarily pop up even if the issue of sex/-uality would).  So, with that in mind, would I drop a milder case right off the bat?  I don't think so.  If anything, it'd probably do these people good to hang out with someone who might expand their minds a bit.  That, of course, is not the same as saying I'm ready to hang out with any downright bat crazy person. Just saying.

May 10th.

Huh.

This thread has grown and changed so much I'm not sure if I should wish Tom a Happy Anniversary or declare this BFG Thread Founder's Day!

I'll go for the Happy Anniversary.  All the best to you and Eric, my friend!

As nature intended!
