I hold doors, say "please" and "thank you", make eye-contact with strangers
and say 'hello' or wish them a good day.
But then again, I'm Canadian. Aren't we supposed to be ridiculously polite?

I hold doors
You just do that to check out the ass on the woman who walked through the door before you. I know. I do it myself!

Speaking of holding doors, I had a woman say to me once, "You don't need to hold that door. I'm perfectly capable of doing it for myself."
I said, "I was just being polite" and shut the door right as she got to it.
"Asshole," she said.

Double-doors (an 'airlock' vestibule like are popular here in the snowy
barrens of Canada) killed chivalry. That's my theory. You can hold the first
one, but trying to get the second is always an awkward farce.

enough of this thread
NEVER!
I can not stand to be called Mrs. Moisan, I am Jodi, Mrs. Moisan is my mother in law who is a very cold and at times made my life horrible. But I know what you are saying about the respect thing, I had an art teacher that I loved and I would babysit his kids, when I graduated I would see him and he would insist I call him by his first name. I just couldn't, his first name was "Dick". Which used to crack me up, Oh to be young and immature, ok fine I am still immature just no longer young.

Jodi -- some of my students have trouble with it. Most recently, the seniors in my AESOP cast, who will say, "Mr. French... I mean, Tom..." Just takes some getting used to.
My friend Carole has two sons whom I've none since birth -- both called me Tom -- but they went to my school, where they had to adjust to calling me Mr. French. Now that they're graduated, they had to readjust to calling me Tom again.

Hey Juan Jose said it not me! I'm just here workin'!
Jodi, speaking of immature... my good friend Bill Benecke used to always
have this train of thought that always cracked us up. Something to the
effect that at some religious schools, you have to call your teachers
"Master" in from of their last name. You know, like "Master Jones", "Master
Smith", etc.
He thought it would be terrible, yet hilarious if one of the Master's had
the last name of "Bates". It could happen...
