Since it is soooo cold and I just read Eds post about lamb stew, I thought I would ask:

What is everyone's favorite cold weather food? Also do you make it or does someone else?

Favorite cold weather food is also probably my favorite meal period.

Beef Stew with lots of french bread slathered in butter. 3 or 4 plates full and I'm good to go.

It's good when I make it but for some reason it is better when my mom makes it. I've gotten it right a few times but she gets it right nearly every time.

Heavily peppered Campbell's Chunky New England Clam Chowder with freshly baked biscuits.

The soup heats up my innards, the oven baking the biscuits heats up the kitchen, and the biscuits heat up my heart disease.

Soup IS good food!

My favorite is homemade potato soup, my grandma made it and I watched her a zillion times and can make it just like her. On cold weather days there is nothing like it, it brings me right back to my grandma's house. I call it a hug for my belly. ;0)

Curry.

In the Cook family that means beef chunks stewed in curry with raisins, onions, and potatoes served over rice.

Arc, I think you're a great person but you really have to stop the pity party.  To make things happen, you need to make them happen.  Granted, I don't know your situation, if your family is overly conservative, etc.  but you always say how unhappy and lonely you are but what do you do to change that?  I'd love to hang out but I'm in New York but there has to be places in Peru where you can make friends, do things.  You said you are not attracted to Peruvians, which is fine - we all have our tastes- but you're 23 years old (or 24).  You're old enough now to control your destiny.  I once felt a lot like you did but I was 15.

Again, I do not know your whole story and I am glad you have this outlet because it does help.  But you also need to take steps.  I sense you're afraid but don't be afraid.  Many of us have done it and for me, to really shed my unhappiness and inhibitions was the best thing I ever did.  To make gay and lesbian friends, to see people on a regular basis, it as as though my world started over.  It was the best feeling.

You're obviously extremely smart so you can do it.  And I'm gonna quote Auntie Mame and say, "Life's a banquet and most sons of bitches are starving to death!"  (And sometimes, I need to take my own advice!)

Stew made by my better half.

Soup is great too. Leek and potato or carrot and coriander.

****

Not an Irish thing. Gravy is. (Made from the juices of a roast). Roast is a Sunday thing in Ireland.
