never thought i'd get so mad watching a debate on same-sex marriage!
The people who are clearly against it use all sorts of stupid arguments to prevent the law from passing and have the gal to say with a straight face they're not against same-sex marriage and are not prejudiced. Some of the things I heard today on the debate:
- Same-sex marriage will lead to adoption by gay couples (they forget in Portugal it is already legal for a single man or woman to adopt, no matter what is/her sexual orientation is)
- Marriage is for reproduction (they forget a lot of straight people who are married do not want to ever have kids, they forget there are senior citizens that get married even when can no longer have kids, they forget there are couples who cannot have kids)
- The major political party currently in oposition, who've always been against same-sex marriage, realizing this will soon become legal, have proposed for same-sex unions (not marriage) or a referendum on the subject They do this because they know a referendum will (at the moment) lead to a "no" result, against same-sex marriage. They forget that equality is not up for referendum - one of the guests even exemplified that in Portugal, until 1976, women didn't have the same rights as men in a marriage, they couldn't file for divorce and had to ask their husbands for permission to leave the country. They now have this rights, none of which was subject to a referendum.
These people who say they're not prejudiced, to me, are worse than those openly homofobes who'll call you faggot to your face. Man, i know in no time this law will pass but right now i'm pissed!

I know how you feel Pedro...after our problem, the results for Episcopal Bishop in los Angeles, the stance of the representative of the Anglican Comunion, and the Marriage Vote in Mexico this next monday...
It's like we say..."one step forward, two steps back".
Don't lose faith!

It's like we say..."one step forward, two steps back". _________________________ I actually said that in my paper for film class. The movie I chose to write about was "Far From Heaven" and now that I think of it, I talked about gay marriage and other things that were, well, not relevant to the work assigned .

yeah well right now i see us taking lots of steps back :( To force the president to allow for a referendum you need 175000 signatures. The "pro-family" group now have 172000. If they get the rest in a few days (and its not that hard) they'll get the president to set a date for the referendum (he's not for same-sex marriage so he just might do it). The council of ministers aproved the law project but now it needs to be approved by the parliament and them ractified by the president. If the president wishes to he can take a full month to make a decision and if he fails it the project can go again to parliament for a 2nd vote. if it is approved a second time the president cannot veto it anymore. So now it's a question of who's fastest: if the law project is approved fast and the president doesn't ruin things we've got the law approved before they can force a referendum and we "win". If the president wants to he can delay things until those guys get all the signatures they need and then set really fast a date for the referendum. about 60% of the population is still against gay marriage so the referendum will kill this for another 3-4 years. :|
Sorry about the local politics stuff... i'm really anxious about all this and i don't even want to get married.. :/
