Marc, I've only visited New York briefly a couple of times. I'd love to go again, even if I don't have enough money to do everything I'd planned...

Thanks all on Jon's well wishes, he will be doing an unpaid internship, which is OK because at least he is getting his foot in the door. He said they told him if they liked his job performance he can stay on with them until a paid job opens up. I am telling you this boy is so excited he would pay them just to work there.
But he will also be looking for a job in his field and really just anything to pay the rent, I see sandwich making in Jon's future for a while. :0)
I am so excited for him to be going on this adventure, I was too shy (yes I know that is hard to believe now) to do anything like this. It wasn't until I had Jon that I finally overcame almost crippling shyness. When he was about 2 we were having the worst drought and Global warming started hitting the news. As a mom I felt helpless to protect him from what we were doing to the planet.
So I got a petition together to start recycling at BSU and started a campus environmental group. Long story short, got the campus, with a ton of volunteer help, recycling. But having to talk to so many people to do it made me over come my shyness. I was Mommy motivated :0)
Geoff I love the toast you made that is a perfect.

The unpaid internship thing just sounds so bizarre to me. Thank god I've been fortunate enough to never had to do one before jumping head first into my career. A lot of graphic designers start out like that, but I think it's a lot of B.S. for companies that are already making hand over fist, that they can't offer at least a minimum wage for working with them. I know it's Marvel, and a job that a million guys would kill form, but sheesh!

Moyer. not so well.
Jodi, if Jon wants to live in Manhattan, he needs to look way uptown to Inwood and Washington Heights. No, they are not that scary even though they're Harlem. They're the only real affordable part of NYC and to me, feel authentic.
The outer boroughs like Jackson heights are cool too but everything is $$$.

He has a couple of friends that lives in Astoria, I think that is what it is called. It's a really cool place, mostly families and a lot of Greek. I'll let him know about Inwood and Washington Heights. If it would be cool, I may be asking a lot of questions about where he's looking.
Most of his friends though aren't native New Yorkers, so it's kind of like the blind leading the blind.
Moyer I know what you are saying about it being unpaid, it actually is going to cost us 250 because to get the internship he had to sign up for this to be a one credit class and apply to grad school. He is so excited about this, he was excited about LA and Dark horse, but this is that excitement, times ten. We figure to do this he will have to take any job he can get, he's going to have to work his ass off to pay his bills. But I know he can do it.
