We started my girls on Music Man...
Then of course, Little Shop of Horrors, My older daughter has moved onto Grease, and Hairspray, and loves Rocky Horror.

"Hairspray" was one of my favorite John Waters movies of all time and the second life it got after the Broadway show just cracks me up.
"Avenue Q" is closing soon. I never saw it and I really should.
Other favorite musicals of mine: "Man of La Mancha" - my mother used to play it when I was a kid and I loved it. I think kids would enjoy it, even if they didn't get all of it.
"South Pacific" (currently in revival) could also be a good one.

Saw the original off-Broadway tryout of "Hairspray" here in
Seattle, with Harvey Fierstein as Edna.
That was a good show.

I have to say, Ed, I totally HATED "Ave Q". I hated it in the same way I hate deconstructionalist comic books. It makes fun of the form, of musicals in general, and takes pride in "shock value" lyrics. Just awful. Be glad you missed it.

For some time now 2 women have been battling in Portuguese courts to be allowed to get married. Today, the decision from our constitutional court (equivalent to the US Supreme court, i think) was against them. But despite the result, the vote was split 3-2 and that gives us a bit of hope that things *are* changing. Like I said the Socialist party will push for same-sex marriage in the next legislature and they're sure to get the support from the Comunist party and other left-wing parties so even if they don't win the majority for next term there is a good chance things will soon change! :)
Thank you Teresa and Helena for your courage to fight for our rights in a country where it's not easy being out.
As a side note: did u know there were more Lesbians this year at Lisbon's gay pride than gays?

I don't think it's ever to early for kids to know Sondheim.

Uh oh, we're back to plays... something I know nothing about I'm sad to say... carry on, I will join in when we get to less cultured stuff!

Pedro -- that's great and sad to hear all at once.
It's a slow-moving process, getting people over their ridiculous fears and religious dogmas. Someday.... someday soon...

I wonder why the vernacular tends toward "gay" as male. One can say "a gay woman" as much as "a gay man," no?

Indeed yes, Michael. The evolution of the word "gay" does indeed use it to identify men, but it's just as accurate to say that of a woman. (Or "womyn", depending on how strident the gal is you're talking about.)
And there lies a bit of the rub. Lesbians, as a rule, don't like to be referred to as "gay;" they prefer "Lesbian." (I've found it a bit fascinating in my time all the effort some lesbians go to to disassociate from men. The "womyn" thing, which I think is ridiculous, as an example.)
Yeah, we're all under the same umbrella, but everybody wants their own identity.
(I fall under the category of "Muscle Bear" myself -- although in this last few years, I have suddenly become attractive to young guys who want a "Daddy.")

Gals who don't like the "men" in wo-"men" -- they don't want their sex to be a dirivitive. It's a bit strident, in my opinion, and it doesn't fool anybody, either. But there it is.
