I wanted to suggest the great book:

You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought:
A Book for People with Any Life-Threatening Illness-
Including Life

by Peter McWilliams

Also life 101 and Love 101.

These books helped me through some rough patches...They are available free at the link above or you can buy them on amazon.

Thank goodness you posted, I was worried I had killed the thread.

It wouldn't be the first time.

Sorry, I was mostly playing on Facebook today.  That Gibson.... man, dude can chat!

So, you're taking your kid to their first Broadway show.  Imagining that all shows throughout time are still running, what show would you... indoctrinate them with?

My first Broadway show was A CHORUS LINE, when I was twelve or thirteen.  I had been performing in theatre for years before this as a child actor.  The first show I appeared in (at 9) was MAME -- as Young Patrick.

I would take a kid to LION KING without hesitation, because it's so visually stunning.  But LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS would be fun, too.

Hmmm....

The first show I remember seeing was the Pirates of Penzanze (sp) followed by Brigadoon.  Living 30 minutes from Broadway we saw a lot of off boradway childrens shows when I was a kid (one I recall reall well was Snow White and Snow White came from out of the audience -- she was sitting next to my Dad). I remember going to Into the Woods -- but for the life of me I can't remember anything about it right now.   We're taking Kaitlin to The Little Mermaid -- any show in history though?  Goodness!  I don't know enough about the theatre to say for sure but I think something with kids.  Maybe The King and I with Yul Brenner (that had kids as I recall)?

As an English major I'd have loved to have seen the orginal casts from the landmark mid 20th centrury dramas, plays by Miller, O'Neill, Williams.  I'd have loved to have seen some of Neil Simon's plays like the Odd Couple or Barefoot in the Park.  Or Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff" with Taylor and Burton (I've seen the film but imagine the drama onstage!).

PIRATES is one of my all-time favorites.  I was fortunate enough to play Frederick when I was young enough to get away with it.  A great role!  Man, I love that kind of humor.

DAMES AT SEA is another great one in that vein.

Oh man, I'd indoctrinate myself with the original production of "Follies" from 1971.  The sets, the music, the costumes.  Man, I'd have loved to have seen that.

But it may be a bit too much for younger kids who may not get the story.  Still, those songs!

I don't think it's ever to early for kids to know Sondheim.
