Tom, is this kid-friendly? Beaucoup bucks to be made in the Xmas trade!
One of the things I'm very good at writing is all-ages humor (remember the MUPPET SHOW? -- think along those lines). When I was approached about S-A-S, the producers had already named it and were booking it. They had a rough concept, but no idea how to execute it.
The first thing I did was remove all religious references. Who was this about, I asked them, Santa or Jesus?
So I ended up writing this very secular show about Xmas -- well, really about Santa Claus, but there's just as much secular music for the holidays as there is religious.*
It played in 30 cities in the US, then played TWO YEARS in Korea! The Koreans LOVED it -- figure that shit out.
*Example: I wrote this bit where the Three Tenors came out (three folks in wonderful fat suits) and sang "The Chipmunk Song" ("Gee, I want a hula-hoop!"). During the instrumental break in the middle, a girl enters with a breath spritzer, clearly labeled "Alum" and sprays each of them in the mouth before exiting. When the Tenors sing again, they sound like the Chipmunks. Brilliant humor!!!!!
Well, the producers HATED that bit, and fought me the whole way (the only reason it stayed in the show at all was because the costumes had already been constructed) until it stopped the Second Act cold every night from the laughter. Then, I was a genius.
