I've been thoroughly under it for the last few weeks at work but I did read this Op-Ed piece by Frank Rich in the Times (admittedly a few weeks ago) but its stayed with me and I thought you all might be interested.

Marc, I had read an article stating that politicians in Rhode Island stated that even if every state in New England approved gay marriage, they would still not allow it.  Apparantly there are strong ties between the legislature and the Catholic church.  I'm not saying it's a conspiracy or anything, just that I'm not very comfortable with any sort of potential theocracy.  Besides, when they start looking after children, then maybe they can take the moral high ground again.  Nothing against practioners of the Catholic faith (most of my family are), it's just when the "biblical scholars" start dictating policies that I get annoyed.  For people who don't pay taxes, they sure seem to have some sway, rather than us who actually do pay taxes.

Jeremiah:

The problem with seperation of Church and State is the Free Excercise or Religion -- or, more appropriately, what some of those Excercisers believes "Free Excercise" means.

People can believe what they want, just when it negatively impacts laws that it gets excessive.

For a group that says it is unfairly defamed, it sure has no problem doing so to any other group of people.

Well, what I mean was that for many religious people there is a belief that "sinful conduct" should be illegal conduct.  Thank goodness for the economy of Maine that that is not, in fact, the case!

Okay, here, I get where you are coming from and I agree that this generation of the American College of Cardinals have waived significant rights to play the role of "moral authority."  If only they alone were using their religious beliefs to deny others rights though!  Either way, it comes from the same source, the idea that "sinful conduct" must always be "illegal conduct."  Which, legally speaking, is absurd and there should be no place for it in American law.

Great pics of you and Eric a couple pages back Tom. That cabin looks great. How is the view from that deck?

If the country needs any Defense of Marriage Act at this point, it would be to defend heterosexual marriage from the right-wing “family values” trinity of Sanford, Ensign and Vitter. - Frank Rich

Tom, looks like you and Eric (and the dogs) had a great vacation. I love hiking - just wish I had more opportunities to do it.

Ed, did you ever get your fried chicken? I can completely empathize - I've been known to have a fried chicken craving from time to time. And, yes, macaroni and cheese is the perfect side for fried chicken.

Whew!...A lot to read and catch up on.

The West Coast Book Whisperer tour is done...7 planes, 6 Airports in three days...exhausting but very fun.

July 4th was all about the family...I made pulled pork bar-b-q with cole slaw (first time to make it) turned out great.

Tom, that photo of Eric hugging Dash(?) is simply stunning.

So we are cleaning up the homestead, and Thursday we are off to D.C.
