Right, Geoff.
That was the one thing that always struck me about the Clinton impeachment thing: I was a political junkie at the time and I was watching Hardball and I couldn't believe it was an issue - 'How could the President be impeached for cheating on his wife?' Then a senior Democrat Senator came on and said that IF Clinton had perjured himself that alone would be serious enough to warrant impeachment. That if the President could get away with perjury then it would open the floodgates and other people on trial would feel more free to lie on the stand. He changed my mind, in that context I had no choice but to agree with him.
Then it was found out that Clinton had perjured himself and that Senator (and there were many other Democrats saying the same kind of thing, but they said it because they believed that Clinton had not perjured himself and thought they wouldn't have to face that decision) voted against the articles of impeachment.
A sliding scale of justice and politically it worked for the Democrats in the short term (Republicans looked like hypocrites and could be lambasted in public as such any time one of their own gets caught cheating on their wife), and they got to keep a Democratic President in power.
But he was a lame duck, and I wonder how different the world would have been if the Democrats had stood on the principles they had espoused before the impeachment proceedings and impeached Clinton. Gore would have pardoned Clinton from any criminal actions (which I believe the public would have supported since losing the presidency is already a high punishment) and then have had two years to grow into the role of being and acting Presidential.
That was one of Gore's (many) downfalls on the campaign trail; he didn't seem at ease with himself and his place in the world and I think becoming President would have cured him of that.
The Democrats, by standing on principle, would have gained respect in many peoples eyes, put a spotlight on an important issue (as I understand it perjury has been increasing over the years as the penalties have not been enforced), and very possibly prevented George W. Bush from becoming President.
I'm not sure how standing up for Clinton worked for the Democrats.
