I like to joke with male friends, when they get engaged, that they have "Joined the Army that has NEVER won a battle." There are also a few more crass jokes about marriage I like to tell them. But I don't think that affects the "sanctity" of their union.
But I think I know what you mean, Marc, and I think that there could be an unfair double standard. If gay couples are allowed to marry there may well be a heightened strain to have the marriages succeed. One of the many reasons, I support marriage equality is because I think one of the rights that comes with the right to marry is the right to divorce. As terrible a process as that is there are, at least, attendant rights that can be protected more clearly, more consistently, than in a break up of an unmarried couple. To expect gays to be perfect at marriage is as ridiculous as expecting straight couples to be perfect at being married.
That said, I do enjoy marriage jokes -- know why a bride smiles when she's walking down the aisle?

Geoff, a married friend told me this joke, "What food is proven to kill a woman's sex drive? Wedding cake."
Marc, I can see how some people would be wary of that joke. Personally, I thought it was funny but the added pressure that comes with gay marriages being scrutinized must be intense.
I mainly used that line of "if they want to be miserable, let them" to convey to people that I really don't see the problem with any two people wanting to marry, that it shouldn't be this huge issue. I don't mean to marginalize it, since it is important to a lot of people, but I figure if some people put the effort and money into food banks and health issues as they do in trying to stop gay marriages, we'd have a lot of progress made. It just seems to be such a minor thing for some narrow-minded people to get worked-up over. Two people want to get married, so? Are they intruding on your life? Are they forcing you to attend their ceremony? If not, then leave them alone and try to have a life of your own.

Well said, Jeremiah.
I honestly can't see how it would disturb people on such a large scale, when as you state, it isn't really as if they HAVE to participate in any capacity in ceremony or anything similar. It's just that others have the right to act in capacity of human beings whilst not disturbing you. Sort of.
Let whoever wants to be married be married (within the normal reasonable limitations of age and consenting adults). I mean beyond those limitations, WTF!

Me thinks Don is a happy camper.
I hate calling them blowjobs that makes them sound like so much work, I like to call them anniversary gifts. LOL
