Al wrote (in response to Don):
"Maybe I should just have a bromance with you. You know, so long as you don't mind that I'm going to get all weepy when you talk about your kids and your granddaughter... I'm a big emotional sap when it comes to that whole side of things."

Um... wouldn't Talley get jealous and start bitching though?

I know it's a good argument, but i hate to say that it's better to let gays adopt than have the kids stay in an orphanage. It sounds as like we're the lesser of two evils.

We can be as good parents as the best straight couple. Compared to MANY straight parents some of us would be better.

I think being gay or straight has absolutely nothing to do with as whether somebody is qualified to be a parent.  The difference is simply that gay people, like infertile people, don't have the simple capability to just breed indiscriminately.  There be plenty of biological "parents" who aren't that.

The writer Andrew Vachss, who's spent most of his life in the pursuit of protecting children (and who started writing crime novels about crimes against children as a means of getting his message out) writes in Another Chance to Get it Right: A Children's Book for Adults (a book from Dark Horse which I highly recommend):
"Biology does not make a man a father. Nor a woman a mother. We are what we do."
In short, if you don't ACT like a parent, mere biology won't make you one.  And if you DO act like one, simple biology won't be a necessity either.  Sure, there are genetics to be traced, a biological heritage to be sure.  But being a parent, to my mind, is about forming a very specific relationship, a bond which quite simply isn't a matter of gene pool, but of responsibilities.

Or even shorter:
No child asked to be born and every child has the right to be loved, protected and raised in a manner which will prepare them for integration in human society as individual.

There are plenty of so-called "parents" that fail that description to my mind.  And there be plenty of people out there who, without yet having kids, have that mindset.  So... which would we want raising the children of the world.

Absolutely, Pedro. Some people would make great parents, and do. Some
people would make terrible parents, and do. Sexual orientation has nothing
to do with that.

I like that part on the grid, "Let Gay Couples Be As Miserable As Straight Couples"!  If you want to risk losing half your stuff, go right ahead!

Jeremiah,

I am of two minds about phrases like that. I have used them myself,
jokingly. I am also fully aware that when most people say that, they too are
joking. However, I also can't help shake the feeling that "jokes" like that will
come back to haunt gay and lesbian people who wish to marry. My gut tells
me that in the long run, it's counterproductive. Thoughts?
