Don, I know what that means too and darn you for forever putting that into my head! Now I don't think I can ever watch Yogi and Boo-Boo the same way ever again.

Sorry Jodi...
Bears tend to have hairy bodies and facial hair; some are heavy-set; some project an image of working-class masculinity in their grooming
and appearance, though none of these are requirements or unique
indicators. Some bears place importance on presenting a hyper-masculine
image and may shun interaction with, and even disdain, men who exhibit effeminacy.[1]
The bear concept can function as an identity, an affiliation, and an
ideal to live up to, and there is ongoing debate in bear communities
about what constitutes a bear. There is also, anecdotally, more
acceptance of tattoos and body piercing in the bear community.
And cubs prefer them.

Whoo hoo! My friend has tickets to Wednesday's "Daily Show" taping and he asked me to come along. So, some of that clapping you'll hear is coming from my hands.

Jodi, a bear is a large, usually very hairy gay man. Usually with some type
of facial hair, usuallly a full beard, but a bear can also just have a goatee,
or a variation of.
Now the large aspect can range from fat large, muscular large and every
combo in between. My buddy George is NY is a bear fanatic. He loves
loves loves bellies and very hairy guys. Just one of those things that is
better off not trying to understand. I asked him if he always liked guys
like that, and he said yes, and for the longest time he was ashamed to
admit it. I wouldn't take him any other way. I think bear-gays are often
times way more down to earth than any other sub group of gays. Usually
no attitude, funny as all hell and will do anything for you.
George considers himself a "cub" meaning he's not a bear himself, but
very into bears. But sometimes a cub can be bearish, or over time
become a bear himself.
I'm sure I missed something, and generalized it way to much, but
hopefully that will give you a good idea. There are multiple bear events all
over the country and even a "Bear Week" in Provincetown that is a huge
event.

I'll never understand you weirdos with your weird fetishes. I find them weird. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to google search for more pictures of pale redheaded women with pointy chins.

I'm a big guy, I look like a former football player and I fucking hate it. People also have difficulty ascertaining that I'm gay, not because I'm so butch but because I'm just ... there.
People sometimes say, "Oh if you grew a beard, you could be a bear." No, thank you. There's a whole mindset to bear culture I don't subscribe to. For one thing, if you growl at me? Just go away.
Bear culture ostensibly was a reaction against the whole body beautiful cult, but now has all of its own rules and rituals and to me, are as annoying as the twinks and the 'roided out Chelsea Boys.
