Kids today aren't fat from what the eat. They're fat because the sit inside playing video games all day.
I agree with you 100% -- it pains me to see all the little fat kids that go to my school.
Jodi's right, too -- kids aren't able to hop on their bikes anymore and just go and do stuff. I remember we'd head out and we'd get home in time for lunch, or mom's screams would get us home for supper.

When you were a kid, what was your favorite thing to do in the summer?
****************
My Dad was in the Army Reserves, so he would have to do his two weeks of annual training in the summer, usually in Augusta, Ga., Mom & I would tag along and that would be our summer vacation. We would "camp out" in a motel room, cook lunch on a hot plate, go to the swimming pool, eat out every night, etc.
It sounds lame, I know. But as a kid, it really was fun. Plus, Augusta had a comic book shop, which my home town did not. As a kid, if you had asked me to pick between going to Disney World and going to a comic book shop, I would've picked the comics shop eight days a week - and still would!

I used to buy mine at a place called The Book Exchange. They sold used books and new comics. Down on the Bobby Jones Expressway.

Wow Mr. T and Pee Wees Playhouse... how'd I miss those? Anyone
remember Pee Week pouring Mr. T cereal all over his waffles in Pee Wees
Big Adventure? Classic!!!
I was a very fat kid, but I played outside all summer. I just had a real bad
diet, and ate like a horse. I was fortunate to have a pool in our backyard
during my tween years, and if we weren't in that pool, we were at the
Navy pool on the base. When we moved to San Diego I began to get real
physical. The summers were spent mountain biking all over the various
canyons and hills, and multiple days at the beach boogie boarding. God I
miss those days and would do anything to be out there again.
I don't have fond memories of the Sears catalog, but in the 80s, we lived
in Dallas, and we had these stores, similar to Sears call BEST. Their catalog was huge, and I would salivate over the new He-Man toys and
just wish I had everyone of them.

Oh Good Lord, Take a day away and see what I miss...
Saturday Morning...As the youngest of five, Saturday's belonged to me. I would wake up early, and park in front pf the TV with a giant bowl of Peanut butter Cap'n Crunch.
It seems absurd, but with only about 5 channels to choose from, I actually had more to choose from (cartoon wise) that kids today do.
1975- 7:00---Hong Kong Fooey (#1 Super Star) 7:30--Channel switch to watch Sigmund and the Sea Monsters 8:00--Switch over to catch the last third of Bugs Bunny Road Runner Show 8:30--Scoooby Doo , or if it was a re-run The Lost Saucer. 9:00--Land of the Lost...Sleestaks were so creepy...and of course I had a crush on Holly 9:30 Shazam 10:00--Far out Space Nuts or Return to the Planet of the Apes. 10:30-Ghost busters 11:00 fight off siblings for one more hour....which could include (depending on which sibling I was convincing...Speed Buggy, Josey & the Pussycats, or Vally of the Dinosaurs...followed by Fat Albert and the Cosby kids. I sometimes would give up Fat Albert so the bigger kids could watch American Bandstand.
Good Times...
Summer...Oh man, Summer was exploration...my friends and I would go any and every where. The rule was home by dark. The best of times were exploring what appeared to us to be a vast jungle, but what was really to vacant lots with a culvert running through...so many jungle adventures....

Speaking of which, anyone think the impending movie version looks fun? My wife AND kids, all too young to know what Land of the Lost is, look at me like I'm nuts when the ad comes on.

I was disappointed that they chose to go the silly route instead of taking it seriously. Would much rather have it be a family adventure movie than a "Will Ferrill" piece. I think they ruined what could have been a franchise.
That being said i will still go see it for the Sleestaks alone.

I used to buy my comics at the Five & Dime. An old-fashioned drug store, complete with soda fountain, decades past its prime by the 1970's, but in the tiny little town that I grew up in, that was just about modern. They had comics in the bottom of the magazine rack (the magazines were pretty much out of reach).
But my uncle -- who's about ten years older than me -- had boxes and boxes of Silver Age DC comics in his closet, which I would dig through when I visited my grandmother.

I bought my comics at a "smoke shop" in town -- basically a newsagent that sold magazines, tabacco and the like. At my grandma's house in PA I would be taken to the 7-11 to see what wonders that spinner had. Superman was always a favorite (still is in fact), but there was Batman, Spider-man and Captain America. Every spinner rack was different and seemed to have different choices. Now I have a pull list. I like the guy who owns the shop -- he's a good egg. But the mystery of what I'll get is mostly gone. And I miss that.

It's as though the 70s were a parody of themselves while they were happening.
I loved this show; the theme song always stayed with me.
