I think that's great Don, and thanks for being such a cool cat. We need more
guys like you!
It's pretty funny once you get used to the idea of coming out to people you
don't know, and feel "okay" with coming out to, I find most of them become
closer to me once they find out.
For some reason being gay associates with "being fun" for a lot of straight
people, especially those more liberally minded and can talk about anything,
especially raunchy stuff!

I completely agree! Why tell your parents first? It's awkward and uncomfortable. I say, get a few practice ones in on strangers and lesser knowns. Once you've got the swing of it, THEN include the folks in the fun!
Seriously Arc, the only person it matters to is YOU. If you're comfortable with yourself, everyone else will be, too.

My parents were horribly disappointed when I told them I was straight. Tell a friend first.

Well, this being Oklahoma in the 80's most people were afraid of the AIDS. I went only to have my friends back...So I could be his "boyfriend" if the need arose and he felt insecure for any reason...It was only after going, and about an hour and half of feeling a bit like a piece of beef (meat market), that we relaxed and discovered just how much fun we could have. _________________________
Well, seems like you are the greatest friend any guy (straight or gay) could ask for. Really, I'm sure that meant a lot for him. I think most people wouldn't have done what you did.

My former psychoanalyst made me realize that I had to overcome my insecurity and low self-esteem issues, but knowing what your problems are doesn't mean you've found a solution for them. So I guess most of the time I don't feel comfortable with myself.

Join the club Arc... we all have a particular neurosis, and I'm terribly shy as
well. I'm terribly moody too unfortunately, so some days I'm waaaay more
sociable than others. My partner call it being a bitch, and I'm damned if I
don't agree more.
In regards to straight people knowing you're gay, does anyone else have
straight friends, upon finding out you are gay, HAVING to divulge any
skeleton that might be lurking in their particular closet? I'll be damned if all
my straight friends tell me something I'd rather not know a lot of times. The
worst being my sister having to share a really disturbing secret I have
wished a million-gajillion times she hadn't ever told me.

I'm shy but I never spend time with people if I'm not in a good mood. I consider it almost as "bad manners" to be angry or sad in front of people. Although my former therapist used to say that it's OK to be sad and still hang around with your friends.
Yes, I guess everyone has some sort of secret neurosis or unrevealed issues.

That's just good advice for life.

Now all we need is the rainbow peacock from NBC and the slogan "The More
You Know" to flash across the screen. Oh wait...
