I may be setting the bar a little lower than Jodi.

Jodi, if it's any consolation, the ratings for Miss America have grown so bad that it's no longer on a regular basis.  A few years ago, they tried to retool it as a reality show where they live together before the pageant.  My sister used to watch the pageant every year and it was a big deal for her.

As for Miss USA, had there not been this incident, would many people have known it was on?  (Hint: when you have Perez Hilton on as a judge, it's most likely not a ratings grabber.)

Having young women parade in swimsuits for scholarships is no longer what so many young women aspire to, it would seem.

The visionary women in 1968 who protested the pageant as sexist and introduced feminism to the mainstream as they unfurled a "Women's Liberation" banner inside the hall during the broadcast were derided as manly, ugly, "bra burners" (no bras were burned that day, but the myth took hold) but in the end, who really won?

Edited to:Due to serious nature the thread has taken concerning Rep. Foxx's comment and the outrage everyone should feel , I removed the joke posters because as a mother of young men, one about the age Shepard was, I felt they should not be posted and detract from the following topic.

Or at the very least, that we don't parade around bigoted show dogs with fake tits.

Kevin I am bleaching my teeth right now so my mouth is full of bleaching stuff and kleenex to keep the bleach from burning my lips and stop from drooling , but I read the comment above and spit out some of my kleenex from laughing so hard. But  that is a show I may tune into.LOL

See what these beauty shows do, they drive women to do crazy things for an impossible beauty. :0D

I love how for years they defended the swimsuit competition, even had a vote around 1995 where people could vote to see whether it stayed or went.  It stayed.  I wonder what the demographics of the voters were.

Attention, attention all gay personnel.

Major Winchester understands the meaning of "Boston marriage."*

*Yes, I know "Boston marriage" refers to women, but I wanted to connect the two anyhow.

Edited for spelling ... and your pleasure.

So, anyone know an actor in the Bay Area who would be willing to play the part of Schrank in West Side Story starting ASAP? Because we need one. Badly.

I'm sure the name Virginia Foxx has surfaced in the "politics" thread, but I think she's worth talking about here, too.

It's rare that someone actually gets me mad with their comments, but to say the stuff she said, in front of Shepard's mother!  Gall...

Pretty lousy, I think.  This fight isn't really adding gays to the existing hate crime legislation.  Its about treating gays as a protected class, like race or gender.  This is a gay marriage fight.  See this quote:

"It elevates homosexuality to the same protective category as race. It's all part of the radical homosexual anarchist agenda" by Matthew Staver, founder of the Liberty Council, a law firm that works on religious freedom cases.

The concern that the opponents have is that there will be Federal law that recognizes gays as a protected class -- which would be persuasive when the issue of equal protection is taken to the United States Supreme Court.  At least thats my take on it.

I'm right there with you Tom.  It would be one thing to say she didn't think "Hate Crimes" should be treated differently, or that sexual preference should not be included in the "Hate Crimes",She'd still be wrong, but at least you could discuss it. But to say that she thought it was a hoax, is beyond the pale.
