Eating's a battle. I love to eat -- LOVE to eat! I'm a Taurus, for heaven's sake, nothing pleases me more than the indulgence of good food. But I never ate well until I lived with Eric, who's the "clean eating" King. He still hasn't forgiven me for my weakness for Chinese Food and Ledo's Stombolis, complaining that it's ruining his abs. Whatever.
But eating well isn't enough. Exercise is just as important. Warm weather is a great excuse to get out and walk or ride. I'm dusting my mountain bike off this weekend and going for a good ride, hauling my 230 around the trails of Maryland.

Wow... 230? Mmmmm!!! You'd feel fantastic just laying on top of me. I'm not
meaning anything sexual by that by the way... I just love the weight of
someone on top, it's almost like a massage.
I miss mountain biking. I mountain biked all over San Diego...sigh...

You'd be surprised how often I hear this. It's one of the reasons I like wrestling so much.
I miss mountain biking.
Me, too! When I lived in Maryland, I was literally a mile away from best state park for trail riding. I used to ride every day. Now I'm just a weekend rider, although I ride my bike everywhere in the summer.

It's next to impossible to bike around here in New Orleans. No room for
bikes, no biking lanes, rude drivers...

Okay since it was brought up, I have lost a grand total of 3 pounds(only been a week)... I know it doesn't seem like a lot, but if I keep that pace I can take it down to where I need to be by about September.
I agree Tom that that exercise will have to take a greater role in my weight loss plan, but for the first month or so, I trying to end a lifetime of bad eating habits, focusing on veggies and portion control. My hope is that after I shed a few pounds I will not get tired as quickly. I am putting my bike in the shop and getting it fixed so I can start riding again.

Don, I meant to throw a compliment out to you yesterday, but it got away from me -- so, GOOD JOB a day late!
Coming at "ideal" weight (whatever that means) from the other end, I used to be obsessed with weighing myself, thinking that once I got to a certain number (for me, 200lbs) I would be done. I aimed everything at achieving that number. Then, once I got there, I still wasn't happy with my body.
That was when I decided to work toward an aesthetic rather than a number, how I looked rather than what I weighed. And you know what? That changed everything! The number wasn't important -- it didn't matter what I weighed. What mattered was how I looked and was I happy with that?
I weighed myself last in January, when I was 235. I haven't since then, but feel I'm down a couple pounds.
We get obsessed with numbers, counting calories, weighing portions, and I wonder if that doesn't do us a disservice? So much more sensible to eat less, exercise more and be happy. The changes come -- slowly, so painfully slowly -- but quality of life has to matter...

Yes, Al....stress is a great weight loss tool. I've been there as well, and it's an effective way to lose weight. The mental stress however ruins the whole damn thing.

I hear tapeworms work too, if they don't kill you.
I thought stress added weight?

I seem to be another exception(to every rule, actually). I peaked at 183 late last year, and since then I've been under a great deal of stress. Meanwhile I'm down to 161. The only dietary change I've made is cutting out the Ritz crackers, which was quite the sacrifice. I love Ritz crackers. I eat them by themselves as a snack. But add some good sharp New York or Vermont Cheddar and I'm in heaven. Still, without the crackers and a good helping of stress, I'm twenty pounds lighter.

My stress has been causing weight loss. Decided I'd run with it and throw in
better eating habits and regular exercise too. It's good to have something to
feel good about.

Tom I totally agree on the weight thing ultimately being about what makes you feel right, and not about numbers. However, I have way to go before I hit either of those benchmarks, and numbers are, for now, easier for me focus on. I think once I have lost enough weight for there to be a noticeable difference, I can concentrate on sculpting a me that I will be more happy with. Right now there is simply more clay than I work with.
When I get to that magical point (where I am still a little overweight, but ready to build up) I will certainly be hitting you up for tips. I will need help getting my chest, abs, and shoulders where I want them, and from the pictures I've seen you know what works.
on the topic of stress...I am definitely a stress eater (especially after giving up the smokes) I think the last 10 pounds I put on were from becoming a grandfather.
