Man. None of my friends are the sort who would hold Oscar parties. Just seems weird.

I have had Oscar parties in the past.  In 2003, I had a really great one.  I even ordered decorations.  It was a lot of fun but some years, I don't watch at all.  It's much more fun to watch it with a bunch of people with food and lots of drink.  It also helps if there are nominated movies you really like.

Last year's race was more interesting than this years.

Plus, this year is hosted by Hugh Jackman who sure cleans up nice but I am sick of every interview he has he keeps saying, "Oh people think I'm gay and I'm not, I'm so not."

Hugh, just shut up.

Plus, the last Oscar party I had ended badly when "Crash" was called instead of "Brokeback.  Whatever your personal feelings are on the film, my party was full of "Brokeback" people and once it didn't win, the party just ended.

HOWEVER, I still don't see how a film can win Best Director and Screenplay but not Picture.

Or get nominated for best actor for basically a one actor film and not get nominated for best picture. I'm talking about The Wrestler. The film was ALL Mickey Rourke for the most part. The result of Best Actor is the only one I'll be looking at. Best Actress will be a "sorry we didn't give it to you last couple of times" award for Kate Winslet whether her performance in the film has merit or not (I don't know or care either way) leaving Meryl Streep, who I like quite a bit with a 11-2 score in nominations I think. Winslet had two big films as well which helps as she might win based on the two.

Without in any way saying that it's easy to judge exactly where a director's, writer's, actor's job begin and any of the others end, nor how the finished product itself can be detached from its compnonent parts, or vice versa...  But the fact remains, that the categories of the Oscar's, BAFTAs, etc attempt just this.  And then you can presumably have a film where the script was the best in competition, the director was the one who could be seen to have done his duties best on the same film, while the end result (the combination of all elements, from acting to editing, etc) wouldn't beat another film.
In the case of Brookeback, it could even be the easy explanation that Crash got the Oscar for best original Screenplay, whereas the former got for best Screenplay based on another medium, and then it was a coin toss (figuratively speaking) as to who got the Oscar for best director and who got it for best film.

As for the one actor movie, David (and I haven't seen it yet),  I'd say that it all depends on what other films are up against it any given year.  And a film is never ever really only about the one actor... the end result includes the editing, cinematography, directing, sound and music, etc.  And if there are five other movies where those (according to some) come together better, why should the one actor movie be a best film?  Which is not to say that this particular film wouldn't be a worthy addition.  I do like Arranofsky's movies, so...

OKAY...another thread drift...

Are any of ya'll Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans? Reason I ask is because
about as far as I've delved into Buffy is the 1992 movie, and I tried to
watch the pilot of the series, but quickly became bored with it.

Now, Buffy, the movie from 1992 has been playing on HBO recently, and I
watch it pretty much every time. By today standards, it's very slow paced,
but I really like the movie. I love Kristy Swanson as a ditz, she's got this
great klutsy fighting style, and I like Luke Perry in his drifter/mechanic
role. Plus Paul Reubens as a vampire is just great to see.

I thought I heard that Joss Whedon really didn't like the movie. Is that
true? And is the show really good? The reason I ask is because I'd like to
either rent the show by seasons (or even purchase a used set online).

I think Whedon feels that the movie script was altered too much and ruined his vision.

The movie and series are night and day.  There's a comic book that came out which re-envisions the movie closer to Whedon's vision.

I found the movie boring and silly, but had only watched it after the series.

The show is really and truly good.  Even that blond vampire in the opening scene becomes a very important character as time goes by.  I won't say how.  Give it another shot, Moyer.

Oh, and I think another reason I like the movie is because of the cheesy
cheesy song by the C&C Music Factory that was used in the movie.

The show is awesome, Moyer.  Together with The West Wing it’s easily the best buy TV-wise in my DVD collection.  I’ve rewatched those shows in entirety, repeatedly.

Can’t speak for the movie, but judging from snippets I’ve seen and what I’ve heard Whedon say of it in interviews, I honestly can’t say I have any desire to see it either.  But the show is great!!!

With Buffy, it might be wise to avoid the first season and go straight to the second. The first season really isn't very good (when compared with the later seasons) and when I finally watched that season (I was working backwards from six) I couldn't believe it had been picked up. Perhaps I would have a different impression if I had watched the first season first, but to me it just didn't hold up compared to the other seasons. Also, there's nothing that would confuse you by going out of order. Whedon (I enjoy his work but don't have the overwhelming love that others seem to) did a very good job of dilineating all of the characters in pretty much every episode so even if you were a first time viewer you would still know who was who, what was what and where the story was going.

First episode I watched (because I was performing as Spike at a convention) was the musical episode; Once More with Feeling, and I was surprised with it being a continuing story that I was able to fall right in.
