Stupid is a banned word in some schools? I could see (sort of) not being allowed to belittle another student through applying terms that state the other student is unintelligent, but I find that when you make it a rule, it both becomes too specific (does it apply to terms like troglodyte, for example?) and also becomes a means to punish those who either ignore the rules or specifically test the rules by pushing them as far as can be. The more rules there are, the more chance that people who would obey the normal rules will run afoul of the expanded rules. Simple rules, fairly applied (in my school, which may have been different, there certainly seemed to be different levels of punishment for the same offences based on popularity. The geeks would get in trouble for talking in class while the cool kids who talked more would merely be asked to quiet down for example) are usually the best kinds of rules.
It reminds me of an issue in my writing group a few years back, some were complaining that people who drew while others were talking were both rude and distracting. I happen to listen better when I'm drawing and it does make time pass faster so I wasn't willing to stop. I also had to point out that it was a rule that I would not obey (I refuse to obey rules I consider to be wrong, always have, so yes I would have worked the term stupid into nearly every sentence I said at school and taken the consequences) and that no one would be able to enforce without the meeting dissolving into chaos. Lead by me. Every time it would be brought up, I vowed to start an argument. Though in this case I saw it as someone looking at someone drawing and deciding that if they can't draw (because they hadn't the ability) then no one should be allowed to draw and there was no way I was going to put up with that nonsense. A silent activity that helps me concentrate doesn't seem much of a problem. That did not pass, though I have to say I was not the only one opposed, most were but often the angry, loud, strident voices are the ones that get listened to and have to be engaged so as not to get their way.

well Steve I don't think stupid is a banned word the same way that SHIT or Fu^& is a banned word. Unacceptable in any and all circumstance. I believe it is considered unacceptable to refer to another person as stupid, name calling being frowned on.
I would say that as a parent I agree for the most part. We raise our children (try to anyway) to accept others for who they are, good and bad. Demeaning someone else is not tolerated.
On a side note along these lines, I was telling a story about a discussion I was having with my wife. I quoted our conversation in which I said that she was just ignorant of the facts. The girls I was talking to went nuts...
"you said that and lived?" I was flabbergasted and said so...
Ignorance is not insulting it merely means that she had not been exposed to the facts yet. She wasn't upset with me because there was no insult meant nor any taken in my comment. Yet had I said the same thing to any of these people they would have been terribly offended...ironically through their own ignorance.

A very good point. Nobody’s stupid because they’ve not been exposed to material, information or facts, what we haven’t been exposed says absolutely nothing about what our brains are capable of taking in (which I guess is much closer to an intelligent/stupid definition). However, persevering ignorance, a downright refusal (or inability) to learn when exposed to information, that’s something else... and the ones who are unable, I can at least sympathise with and still take seriously much more easily than the truly mindboggling stupid people who just refuse.
And hey, Marc, feel da looove!
