Geoff, Her dad lives down the street... it's just so much easier than Mr. Miller.

Oh thank God. I re-read what I'd written and thought it sounded awful.
(Like creepy awful. It read even worse after I took the quote marks off the
word Daddy.)
I was just about to delete it completely when I read your post, Don.
Thanks for that.

No, Al I knew exactly what you meant...There's really no ick factor. Some of Celeste's friend would interchangably call whatever parent happened to be standong there by Mom or Dad as a sort of shorthand for parental unit in charge...

My parents were always "Mom" and "Dad" to all of my friends - even through
my high school and college days. Recently, one of those old, very good
friends of mine lost his own father.
He has now switched from telling me whenever we speak to "say 'hi' to my
other father for me" to "say hi to Dad for me."
If I can be half the person to other people's kids that my own parents were
then I'll have something to feel proud about.

Yeah, but you're not half the man Nate was - you're not even half the man the top half of Nate was.

Kids know.
I'm not sure how else to explain it. Kids can tell if you are truly engaged with them and want to be a part of their lives. That means visiting kids as well. I always welcome my daughters' friends and try to include them in whatever we have going on at the moment...Try to get a feel for whatever play activity they are involved in...
I spent a good twenty minutes just the other day, listening to the ongoing drama amongst the Littlest Pet Shop crowd.

Sure, like painting, refinishing the floors, building a deck . . . .

Was talking about this the other day with my partner.
Its tough knowing what to call people. I dunno what to call his parents (I've never actually used their name in their presence and refer to them as "your mum" and "your dad"). My parents insist he calls them by their first names. They're not ones for formalities and calling them Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson makes them feel old.

Unless its really, really close friends of ours our kids are told to refer to adults as Mr. or Ms. (Mrs.) and the person's last name. I think its a matter of respect. When I used to coach little league (before I had kids and was a good for nothing twenty something) I asked the kids to call me coach or Mr. G or Mr. Gibson. I told the parents I just felt more comfortable that way and it helped me keep discipline on the team. We still lost more games than we won* but my kids all played hard (and all played) and they all had fun.
*Don't get me started on the bullshit of little league drafts -- for three straight years I got last pick or second to last pick because I wasn't a dad-coach. Frigging old boys network I so know how Hillary feels!!! And yes I am still bitter about that we were always at a talent deficeit!!!!!
