Nah… I'm lying. I'd get that DeLorean and head to the future. There's bound to be an antique's shop with a copy of the Sports Almanac somewhere.

Well there's always a wish to go back and change one thing in your life
(multiple things?). Sure, what happened then, did make us into who we are
today, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing sometimes.

Geoff, I really identify with what you're saying here. And not just the
wistfulness, but the questioning yourself about it. It's amazing how much
in life we figure we should feel guilty for.
I'm 39. I have an incredible wife - she's gorgeous, fun, sexy, outgoing,
giving and smart. She's confident and secure. We share the same sense
of humour, and interests, and beliefs. We are incredible partners for each
other. I can't imagine life with anyone else. She is my ideal mate. I love
her deeply.
But, for reasons that I will not get into here, we are childless. It affects us
both. For me, it is quite simply a hole in my life - an ache. A persistent
sadness almost.
And even though the thought of not being with her is almost
incomprehensible, I sometimes find my self contemplating the simple fact
that if I were with someone else, I likely would not have this hole in my
life. And that every day that passes, the likelihood of my being a father
becomes ever more remote.
And then I feel bad about thinking about such things.
I know that's not really remotely similar to what you were saying, but I
guess I'm just saying that I totally get where you're coming from. I think
it's human nature to wonder 'what if?' and to feel nostalgic for things
you've either moved on from or never had.
It's part of the flavour of life, and it wouldn't be near as rich without it.
Edited to fix a confusing spelling mistake.

Wow, Al, that was very eloquent. There were a series of articles in the Toronto Star a couple weeks ago touching on the very same topic, first with a man whose teenage son died and then others who, through whatever reasons, never had children. They describe similar emotions to what you have just conveyed, Very touching stories.

Al:
Your message is heartfelt and I agree in life we appreciate the sweet because of the bitter. I've sent you an e-mail with a private thought, but let me say publicly I am glad to be your friend. In the words of the Man, 'Nuff Said!

Exactly, Geoff.
It is the sad dark threads that weave life into the dazzling tapestry that it is.
We all have some of those threads. I don't think it's a bad thing to look at
the tapestry every now and then and see how they weave and weft. We're
stronger and richer for them.
So, to sum up then: wist away! It's all good.

As I said in our e-mails last night, Al.....you're a good man and a fine friend, your support has been helpful, and I extend the same offer to you.....anytime you need an ear.....
Now, on to something more serious...your wife shares the same sense of humor?? Why....the mind reels......

Some of the more questionable things I've posted here have been her
suggestions, even.

Al -- If your reasons for being childless are biological, please consider adopting. There are many parentless children who desperately need the love and intelligence you and your wife could provide! I would think it a lucky, lucky orphan who'd get you guys!
