...hope for scholarships?

One of the recent graduates from my school -- brilliant and wonderful girl -- whose parents are both high-profile doctors, just got a free ride to UVA.  Man, THEY must've breathed a huge sigh of relief, right?

I told them they could spend her college fund on me if they wanted.

They laughed.

Andrew -- I do all of that and I know its going to cost a fortune.  Add to that two weddings to pay for --- you wonder why I vote Republican?!?!?  I need all the money I can keep!

Add to that two weddings to pay for...

\Maybe one of them will end up a lesbian and you'll only have to pay for HALF a ceremony!  (That's just a joke, Geoff.  Please please please don't be offended.)

I wouldn't be offended Tom.  If either or both my daughters are gay it won't affect how I feel about them or what I wish for them.  Or my willingness to pay for a wedding, which, by that point I hope will be legal!

*Edited to add: By the way the joke was good, but my wife would make me pay for the whole thing anyway . . .

Ours ended up being more expensive than either of us anticipated, and we didn't even have a "proper" service.  The good news?  There's three cases of leftover red wine!!!

That has never happened at any party I have ever had -- left over food yes.  Booze? Not a chance.

Sidenote: In the One person/one vote thread, you were discussing the sliding scale of "middle class."  Here in DC, I earn just a little over $50K which would be a King's ransom in some parts of the country, but is poverty level around here.  Eric earns substantially more than that (though no guarantee of anything, being a real estate agent), but there are still neighborhoods that are WAY out of our abilities as close as a mile away!

You have a passel of kids, Jodi.  Don't you worry about college costs?

Not quite a passel, it just seems that way, because I am one of those moms that likes to talk about her kids all the time. :0)

I have 2 by birth and several that have just some how ended up living here. I have a 21 almost 22 year old and a 12 year old, I was 38 when I got pregnant with Jackson, my youngest.  Tom I'm interested in the autism/old age info, Jackson has a degree of autism.

We saved and Jon worked hard and got a partial scholarship. Jackson we are putting away more for him then we did for Jon, because of our age. It's funny when we had Jon we were so poor, we had finally both just finished college when I had him. With Jackson we are pretty well off, Chuck is CFO of the company he works for. In fact it's funny what Geoff said what he did, because that last raise Chuck got, I asked him if we were now rich enough to be republicans. :0)

But you know, as my grandma said, if you wait to have kids when you can afford them, you will never have them.

One more year of college for Jonny-boy and we will be done for 6 years, and he gets to walk out debt free. Woot Woot!!!

They are expensive, but boy they are worth it!

Booze? Not a chance.

Right.  And there were easily a couple dozen educators in attendance.  You'd think we'd have been bled dry!

Jodi -- I'll dig up the studies and either email you or post the links here.
