I've never understood the Clay is gay jokes thing because there was always a sneering veneer to it and I didn't know if it was condescencion to gay people, or just a sneaky way to get out some anti-gay jokes at Clay's expense.

I would like to say I'm the man who turned Lindsay off men. I would LIKE to say it, but it's not true.

That's OK Kev...there's plenty of other women you can turn to Lesbianism.

I always read this as a sneer and or condescension at Clay himself rather than any kind of anti-gay thing....More of a who on earth do you think you are fooling.
That being said, who cares if he is gay?

But the more I thought about it, people didn't vote for him because he was gay or straight, they voted because they liked to hear him sing. Does his sexual orientation really matter?
Absolutely not. So why lie?

Here's something I've learned -- if I'm confident about my sexual orientation, and present myself to others as confident about my sexual orientation, it's not an issue. It's NEVER been an issue. But people who are insecure about themselves, or afraid, or set out to deceive, those people seem to be preyed upon more.
Now, that's not to say "bad" things haven't happened -- I lost my first teaching job for being "out" (back in '87) -- but they haven't kept my life from moving forward in a positive manner.
It's the deception that bothers me.

I think that is most people's problem with it.
This is not a Tom Cruise (not saying he's gay or anything) type situation where when he started his career the stigma may have destroyed his career, and nowadays the stigma of a decades long lie might have the same effect(though, I think it would be opposite)..
Here we have a young guy just starting out his career, given a big push by a national "talent" show...he could have started out with a clean slate.

I think if he was openly gay he'd have not made the finals of American Idol, I hope I am wrong, but I don't think we are yet that tolerant a people. But I am feeling very cynical today (rather than my usual "peppy" optomistic self) so that could be coloring my thoughts.
