Here's how I see this thread.
Tom & Eric got married. This thread is the reception. Like the best
receptions, it's turned into a great party, with friends coming from all
over to have a good time, pay their respects, get a little crazy, have
amazing discussions off in the corner when they're not on the dance
floor, and get into a drunken disagreement or two over nothing.
Lars, Geoff; Have another drink, go hit the midnight buffet again, get
back out onto the dance floor, and let this one go.
That goes for me, too, but since I can't dance, I'm going to go get Talley
so we can embarrass ourselves with the pale hottie that Hagerman is
chatting up...

We gonna have to check her for a pulse?? I mean, it's been quite a while for me, but I still do have some standards.

Um... I gotta agree with JB on this one: it IS the thread that wouldn't die! How happy I am that I started it.
Listen, I married Eric because I love him. I will always love him. My friends know that commitment, my family knows that commitment, and my co-workers do, too. Even my students do, now.
I've said a million times, I'm not looking to be a spokesman, but can't help but be a role-model. I'm never going to change the way people think about homosexuality, but I'm not going to try, either. All I can do is do my best and live out my life (a little Voltaire reference there).
With the support of freethinkers like you all, that life will hopefully be very happy.
Now let's get back to the drinking!!!!!

Believe me, Brian, I've had my fair share of shunning within my own "community." (A community that I believe at heart is separatist because of the false sense of security inherent in hanging around with a like kind.) I've had gay guys call me a "closet breeder" because I'm a passionate football fan, because I have more straight friends than gay, because I spend such a great amount of my creative time mocking them -- see my book (still available on Amazon.com <--- that was almost a whore-like "Pigboi" plug).
I'm sure to raise Baptiste's ire by saying so, but there it is. I believe in equal rights, don't get me wrong, but I also know equality will never come as long as we hide under this umbrella of "community."
Anyway, I have no issue with the discussion on this thread as it progresses. I read all of the comments in the article you posted, Brian -- and even made a comment of my own (that being: where do all these gays keep coming from if the gays themselves aren't propagating? And I LOVE when the response to that is "Satan's influence."). Best to Ellen and her new partner. Hope she's as happy as the rest of us married people.

You've lost me. I'm by no means crusading here, but yes, I wouldn't mind it if these people , i.e. bigots (and not only concerning gay people either, I'd be happy to throw in racists and whatnot), actually changed or as it were died out as time progesses. And, before any of that that is misinterpreted, no, it is NOT a call for massacring bigots, more a kind of hope that their ranks won't be as strongly renewed as time moves on and the older guard pass on due to natural causes. I may not believe in Utopias, but I can't see any faults in aiming for those stars and possibly getting a bit closer. And seriously, exactly what have I said that makes you infer that I a) want celebreties put at risk (and what risk are we talking about here exactly?), and b) want what expanded further in what way?

Al, isn't that how one spells coronary? ;) So... I guess Canada isn't for a fish-vegetarian (or is that pescetarian? Saw the word just the other day) like myself then? And here I had your country on my list of interesting places to go and all...

Ah well, isn't rock music supposed to be coming from that quarter as well? And if that's the case, how can it be bad? I mean really... No rock music?

…where do all these gays keep coming from if the gays themselves aren't propagating?
••
Homosexuality is, to me, one of the strongest proofs that our primary function here on
Planet Earth (along with every other living thing) is reproduction. The drive is so
overwhelming, that even people whom Nature would seem to have "programmed" to be
doomed for extinction find ways to reproduce. Even when we eliminate closeted Gays (of
which, alas, there are still many) who keep the genes in the pool, there are plenty of openly
Gay couples who, thru donated sperm or eggs, have children of their own.
There's something of an irony there, of course -- the repressive cultures that keep Gays in
hiding are effectively guaranteeing that homosexuality will never, as logic would insist it
should, "breed out". By forcing Gays to pretend to be "normal", those cultures ensure that
there will always be lots and lots of homosexuals out there corrupting and destroying
society.
Or, at least, that Musical Theater will endure!
