Wow, I forgot how much happened in this one.
The whole reveal that there were combat scenarios was great -- suddenly
we realized that there was a *lot* we didn't know about the Next Men's
time in the Greenery. And the bit where Nathan makes a gun is a clever
tie-in to Jack's attempt to do so in issue 1. In retrospect Jack seems much
less naive!
Gerry didn't reprint the page, but I seem to recall that Nathan and
Jasmine suddenly become creepily mechanical when they start shedding
clothes to have sex. A subtle hint that they were programmed with an
inherent desire to get it on as often as possible.
Best of all was the hint about the true nature of the Omega Men, with that
throwaway line from the old man about there only being "four" of them,
even though we can plainly see five. That really messed with my young
head at the time. ("Did Byrne screw up? Is that a typo? What's going on
... ?")
Great stuff. My favorite superhero trope is a team of heroes facing off
against their a group of counterparts/opposite-numbers. I love when it's
done straight, and I love when it's done with a twist. This arc fell into the
latter category, and the twist was undeniably a unique one.

And there it is...the issue thaty stopped my wife from ever reading another comic book. She felt genuinely betrayed by Nathan and Jazz, which made me thinmk that JB had done a really good job. Unfortunately 14 years down the line (since she read it), she still will not get involved...maybe I'll try and alienate her again with the phonebook...

Unfortunately there is no going back on that one for her...but I really thought it illustrated how well you wrote those characters for her to care so much about them as she did. In fact I have just told her about the reading club and the issue we got to and instantly she said..."oh, the one where they cheated"

I viewed Nathan and Jazz as a natural progression of what they were going through not only with those two, but also Bethany and Jack kind of migrating toward each other. Plus, since everything else was 'virtual' before they were in the 'real world', is it really cheating? Not sure on that one. Of course, maybe I missed something deeper in them, but it seemed kind of shallow in a way since it wasn't real and somewhat programmed.

That final panel on page 8 really threw me for a loop the first time I saw it.
