Dan,

The Galactus piece is a re-colored and effects-added version of
page 17 from FF #262, the trial of Reed Richards.

Y'know, this reminds me of the only time I ever talked to Jim
Warden at DOA on the phone, about 10 years back. He gave
me a quote for this very page (always a favorite of mine). I think
it was $500 or something. Sigh. If only . . . !

GAH!!!

JB would you care to elaborate? What mistakes can make you so depressed?

I believe that that Galactus face came from the Trial of Galactus TPB, if memory serves me right.

I've often wondered what those square pupils are in Galactus' mask.
I think it is real cool though.
Was it John who first drew them that way?
My best guess would be godly eyeglasses, after all Galactus is the oldest living being in this universe.

Kirbry first drew the square artifacts in the eye holes
of Galactus' helmet. He was fortunate enough to
have a colorist who recognized them as part of the
helmet, too. I was not, no matter how many times I
pointed it out.

No help that Layton had Galactus remove his helmet
in his HERCULES series*, and drew them as if they
were his eyeballs!

*This was the series in which Galactus was played
for laughs, after Shooter instructed me, and I had
taken great pains to "restore" him.

I knew in my heart of hearts many years ago that John would eventually end up doing a DOOM PATROL comicbook series. And from the looks of those pencil pages it looks as if it was well worth the wait. Next up methinks should be the Rawhide Kid series.

Well if Jack were still around I would ask him what the purpose was for those square holes. I seem to remember that Galactus cannot remove his helmet for some reason. Is that correct?
Look at this Galactus. I don't see the squares in his helmet here. And this was way before Bob had him.

When I did that drawing of Galactus I was still a fan
artist, and had read perhaps a third of the Galactus
stories published so far. I had not even read his
origin, as told in THOR (as you can tell from the fact
that my unmasked Galactus looks nothing like
Galen, the being who became Galactus).

By the time I came to write and draw Galactus in FF I
had absorbed all there was to know about the
character (up to that point) and had a much broader
comprehension of who and what he was.

You know -- kinda like how you knew more in High
School than you did in kindergarten.

Hmm...

It's pretty embarrassing when fictional cartoon women make you go:
