When I think of Steranko, I mainly think of the fact that he was the inspiration for my favorite comic character, depicted at left.

I had the privilege of meeting him once at the San Diego Con.  He had some awesome stories about Harry Houdini.

Steranko is among a few comic artists which seem to have done all, said all they had to say in comics in a very short span of time.

Just LOOK at those pages.  He is a god.

Anybody has scans of his Superman story?

He´s a larger-than-life legend.  He should put on 200 pounds and retire in Tahiti.

I think Steranko, along with Neal Adams brought comics to a whole new level. Personally, I think NA was a better draftsman, and was able to infuse Kirby's power and a sense of reality... while Steranko did SO much with design, and use of Black, negative space... especially in a time when lots of black just meant mud. Visually, the industry wouldn't be what it is today without him...

Steranko for his time was absolutely groundbreaking - now, not so much, a lot of others are doing what he started, but he was definitely one of the people that the phrase "think out of the box" suits his life in the comics field.
i have no doubt Jim Steranko is most likely as innovative as ever, just not in comics.

I apologize, but this seems kind of like a back-handed compliment. Steranko doesn't have to be "innovative" in today's context...he was simply Steranko in 1968 within the comics field, and that was enough to establish him as a legend. He doesn't have to pander to today's comics "innovation", as he is an anachronism at this point, an artist who continues to carry on a tradition of actual COMICS art, instead of whatever is being called "art" today.

The whole point was, he knew how to cull the most dynamic elements from other artists and meld it into a distinct style that enabled him to work in the comics field to begin with. But Steranko is a King, pure and simple, and I can't imagine a world where he is not considered one of the premiere artists of the Silver Age, small body of work or not.

Steranko is just a pure Mack. This is him with Carmine Infantino, who looks like Raging Bull and also awesome.

Some young badass Steranko. Rockin the gemstones, jack!

My first exposure to Steranko art:

By the way, I found a cool web page where I pulled the Steranko gemstone pic. Shows off a ton of the classic creator dudes in the bloom of youth. Pretty nice:
