"Why was the body of work so small? He is still around almost 40 years later
but nothing in several decades..."

I have a feeling it's due to the fact that there's more money in commercial
art outside of comics. Unless you are truly possessed by the art-form, your
gonna do better somewhere else...
Steranko has done alot in magazine publishing, movie work, book cover
illustration, and his own occasional comics work.
Just not Marvel & DC...

That's my take, at least...

Steranko for his time was absolutely groundbreaking - now, not so much, a lot of others are doing what he started, but he was definitely one of the people that the phrase "think out of the box" suits his life in the comics field.
i have no doubt Jim Steranko is most likely as innovative as ever, just not in comics.

Steranko was great, but he never reached the status of Kirby, Ditko, Eisner, etc. because his time in comics was so short.

The guy just had to many interests to stay in one place for to long.

btw - he was the designer of the look for Indiana Jones.

That magician painting is Steranko-licious!

Now that's interesting trivia!

I think he's one of those guys who are so good he could have left a bigger mark in comics if that is what he wanted.

Steranko's body of work is WAY small, much smaller even than someone like Adams.  And he was only active in comics for an extremely short period of time, less than five years if I recall correctly.  If he's relegated to a footnote I'm sure that's why.  His work was really great and groundbreaking.  In a way it's a tribute to the quality of his work that he's remembered at all... name any other talent who produced such a miniscule amount of comics pages that is remembered like Steranko is.
