In re JB's copy/print question, I would be not a whit less pleased with that kind of recreation or reimagining.

JB - I like that idea. I would love to see that done on a cover recreation to see how it compares to the ones you letter yourself. I hope this means we will be seeing a cover recreation soon where this could be tried.

"So, I've been thinking -- what if I scanned the cover at hi-res,
stripped out everything that wasn't the copy (blurbs, title, balloons, etc), and
printed that onto the blank stock I then draw the new art on?"

Personally, I would rather know you did it by hand even if it isn't perfect ("sucks" as you put it....). If I requested the cover copy I want your lettering. I have a couple such commissions from other artists (Hembeck and Trimpe) and I enjoy looking at their lettering and all the little "imperfections".

I kinda like the way it is...though I guess as a compromise instead of printing directly on the stock, maybe it can be lightboxed?

I too would prefer the hand-lettering over any sort of pre-printed lettering.

Suppose I could go back to 1976, and tell myself that when Archie Goodwin offers me UNCANNY X-MEN, I should say "No, thanks."
**************
Well, I'm glad you can't do that, JB! No matter what has happened since then, your work on Uncanny is too good to lose.

Wow! I'm completely blown away. Thank you, John. I think the piece is incredible and yes you are a good guy. I've had the idea for this commission for a few years and have been waiting to bite the bullet and get it done. I'm finally glad the wait is over. It is even cooler than I imagined it would be. I really like the change in position for Magneto and the more aggressive fighting stances for the characters. It is a perfect homage. It is true to the original cover, yet it still has the added John Byrne flavor that makes it different.
In regards to your question about lettering, I like your writing directly on the piece. Incorporating your signature in the comics code logo is genius. I am very excited about seeing this in person. Did I say wow yet?

Great, now Rich Johnston will be reporting in LITG that John Byrne is earning six figures for 11x17 commissions, making him the highest-paid comic artist in history!

It wouldn't personally bother me if I were to commission such a picture. I think it would be good to give the commissioner the option of having it one way or the other, though.

VERY cool! Great idea Paul. It will look even better in person when you get it.
Another observation re: the 9 figures vs. 6. While some may think "those little figures in the corner box COUNT?"...remember, this is a reduced scan we're seeing on our screens. At 11 x 17, those corner box figures are a pretty decent size!
