Surprising thing about this to me is that I've been approached by people to do stuff like this. I never have, but I always wondered if they knew how easy it was to just print it off and trace it. Sure it takes some skill to do it well, but that's just practice.

I did swipes when I was learning to draw but it was freehand, I'd look at the drawing, draw the shapes, draw the guidelines and then finish the drawing while looking at the picture. It really isn't that easy to do but much easier than starting off with a blank piece of paper.

I did a drawing of Wolverine about five years ago that I thought was pretty good for a friend of mine. Original composition, with JB's costume. The guy pulled out a comic and asked if I could do that. I thought he meant costume (it was the gay biker look), and I said I didn't really want to but I'd give it a shot. Then he said he wanted the pose and the style, costume didn't matter. I thought that was funny, he wanted the easy way, and hell if I had a lightbox and just traced it I'm sure he would have been thrilled. I don't think people realize how rude that is. Not that it's illegal or anything, but it's a form of plagiarism.

"To people in the comic world, it's a recognizable image."

Is it?  Really?  I bet there aren't a lot of comic fans who would recognize that on sight.

Saying people in the comic world would easily recognize the image, which is debatable...(I recognized the style of the monster, not the image as a whole.  This is not the same as using an iconic cover like Action #1)  does not excuse not crediting the original creator of the piece, after all this is not aimed at comic collectors.

all about the context.
