Welcome, Mr. H.  I didn't realize that you were the artist responsible for some of those cool covers!

I already posted these images in another thread, but this is the perfect
place to repost them. I wrote this:

Hi,

This is my latest comission in progress. I asked Ed Hannigan to recreate
the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #168 which he drawed originally
embellished by Romita sr.

Bob McLeod is going to apply his great skills embellishing with ink and
wash tones, in a similar way like the Zeck piece.

Allow me to encourage you to comission Hannigan. Not only he's a good
affordable artist and a great guy, but you can also help him since he
suffers Multiple Sclerosis.

This is his site:

There's some pretty cool looking stuff on that site.  Ed has done some of my favorite comic covers through the years.

Didn't he do the art in the first LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT story arc? I remember liking it very much.

Thank you all very much.

To answer some questions, yes, I did the first 4 (or was it 5?) Legends of the Dark Knight.

About the time I drew that my wife and I moved from New York to New Hampshire and started a family. I have a daughter and a son and a beagle .

In addition to drawing covers, I designed tons of them that were assigned to other artists. That was my main gig for years. I still have lots of the cover sketches, mostly from DC. I let many Marvel sketches get away, because  I didn't realize they would have any value until later in my career.  Some of them must still be out there, so keep your eyes open. I don't want them back, but a high res scan would be nice if anyone has one or two of my old sketches.

As to where I've been, when the comics industry collapsed in the early 90s and there was no work to be had,  I found  a job as a Graphic Designer for a publisher of informational (mostly health-related subjects) booklets in Massachusetts. They trained me in desktop publishing and graphics software (Photoshop, QuarkXpress, Freehand, etc.) which I turned out to have an affinity for. It was a second dream career with a bunch of great, talented people . Unfortunately I had only been there for a little while when the MS symptoms started. At first they were only annoying but as they got worse it  became obvious that I would not be able to work much longer.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) after I was there 9 years they had  a big layoff and along with 20% of the employees I lost my job . However, they offered a very good severance package that I would not probably not  have been able to get if I had just quit. The timing was not great though. I would have liked another year or two there.

Since then I have been on SS Disability. I do some commissions, but they don't pay that much. Under the Disability terms I am allowed to make  a certain amount per month but I don't even come close. I'd love to work in comics again, but I know I would not be able to handle much work at all.

Having MS sucks, but believe me there are much worse diseases and I am far better off than many people. I do physical therapy in a pool three days a week, which has helped a lot, and I get a lot of support from family and friends. It's not great being unable to work for a living, but so far we have managed.

Anyway, enough sob story. I'll be around when I can. Thanks for the welcome and warm wishes.

Ed

Hi Ed,

Do you still live in New Hampshire? I live in Bow N.H. just south of Concord.

Bill.

Ed,

I'm a very big fan of your Green Arrow work.

Sorry to hear about your battles with MS. My wife was diagnosed five years ago, and at this point is still able to work.

But, as you say, having MS sucks....that's for sure.
