Forget FF!  Makes me wish they'd given him the New Gods job (he was also in the running for that).

"Makes me wish Wood had inked Kirby on FF! "

Apparently (according to one published anecdote) Kirby and Wood went to Stan Lee and asked him to put Wood on as inker on one of Kirby's regular books (though I don't think it would be the FF). Both of them really wanted this to happen, and Kirby wasn't usually a guy who made requests of this sort.

(As you'll recall, Evanier describes how loath Kirby was to cost Colletta the job of inking New Gods until he learned how much he erased and short-changed the art. )

Stan, as the story has it, said that Kirby's work was so strong in the pencils that he could have anybody ink it, while Wood was such a polished inker that he could salvage the crappiest pencils. And having two good books instead of one great book made more business sense.

The anecdote, as I read it, goes on to describe how this disappointed Kirby and completely devastated Wood (who despite his defense of "hacking" and "swiping"  seemed dedicated to being the best artist he possibly could be. At least at this point.  )

I can see Stan's point, but I think its decisions like these that cost him Kirby in the long run. I think a 100 issue run of Kirby and Wood would have been a beauty to behold, whether on Avengers, Thor or even a Marvel based New Gods.

Ah. What could have been.

And if Stan Lee would pay Wood for his writing work and credit him for it,
we would enjoy his work in Marvel for years no matter the series.

Byrne: I just posted the image of your original in my blog. You'll find it here. If you wish
something translated, just ask.

Thanks for the link!

Anyway, the translation, although it's enough to learn about it, it's not too
accurate (even funny!).

Allow me to use that as a starting point to make it more understable...

"Original of sunday #18 of Sky Masters, by Jack Kirby and Wally Wood.

It belongs to John Byrne's impressive collection (I know that it's
impressive because I heard something about it, but it's not made public).

As far in the forums of Byrne's site there is an issue devoted to Sky
Masters, and Kirby and Wood, Byrne has been kind enough to make a
photo of his original and allowed me to upload it to my blog.

Do you remember that Jim Warden bought the original art of the
promotional image of Sky Masters on a visit to Roz's home, Kirby's
widow? Yes, man, you'll find it here (ok, I'm sorry, it's in English, but at
the time I was not able to translate it). Well, Warden, at request of Byrne,
bought the original of the sunday which is shown in the photo, one of the
best samples of the series.

You can also visit Bhob Stewart's blog, Potrzebie, since he has devoted an
entry to the Sky Masters edition of Glénat. Bhob is editor of the book
Against the Grain: Mad Artist Wallace Wood, the most comprehensive
book about this brilliant author. By the way, have a look also to his blog
in general, since it is very interesting."

You'll find the links in my blog.

Byrne: If there's something that need correction, just ask.

>arf, arf<

I just finished searching the thread, but the only pieces owned by Byrne that
I found were his latest acquisitions.

I'm sure that he must own great treasuries like the Sky Masters piece, but I'm
not surprised that he wish to keep them not public, since there are many
collectors who are very annonying with unrequested offers to buy them.
