That FF splash from "The Way It Began" is probably my favorite FF splash of all time. No doubt.

By the way, speaking of those Galactus/Sphinx/Skrull gargantuan storyline from the FF 1970s, I recall loving it and also really being freaked out by it. I thought the FF would never get home again, and when they did, I wished they were still in space (where, I realize, they belong a lot of the time, being interdimensional astronauts and all).

Reading those Marv Wolfman words with the JB/Sinnott art, I'm amazed at how over-written they are. Galactus does go on about how awesome he is. At the same time, you weren't just going to fly through this ish like with comics today. There was content there, even if a bit on the verbose side.

"Have you tried changing the zoom level on your computer while using the FF DVD?"

Yes I have.  The problem isn't the zoom.  It is the scrolling and such.  On this site I just start at the top and read all the way down.  Very easy.

Chad -

Do you have the Marvel Stamp version from series B ?  It is definitely a thrilling splash !

I agree with you re: "flying through today's comics".  I still maintain that the majority of comics from the 60's through the 80's are much better "written" than today's comics.  Most of today's issues (Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Girl being wonderful exceptions) are mostly pretty pictures with little text/dialogue to draw the reader in !

As for the "world devourer's verbosity" . . . . to me Galactus is trying to teach the Sphinx a lesson !  It is G's way of being "gracious or merciful" to the Sphinx to encourage him to back off !  In other words, the Sphinx is just a flea who needs to realize his place in the grander scheme of things !

I'm with you all the way Michael !  I honestly don't enjoy reading comics in the GIT format.  The up/down, left/right is tedious.  And the big splash pages need to be zoomed in/out to both appreciate the full scale of the picture and then to read the text !

Long live paper comics !

BTW: I am grateful to have the GIT DVDs though.  They are great for reference and filling in story gaps.  As for the first 100 FFs, I usually read the Masterworks collection in my La-Z-Boy chair !  Great color reproduction and I can hold it in my hands !

One of Reed's badder moments, pounding Klaw into unconsciousness with vibranium knucks on his fists, from Lee/Kirby:
