I enjoyed MTU. Glad to see them being reprinted in the Essential format. My first issue was MTU#6. Spider-Man and the Thing drawn by Gil Kane.

I remember hunting for this one when I was a kid.
Back in the day, if ya missed one, you're screwed.
I was in full must-have-all-Byrne's-work mode, found out
that Byrne did this and searched for it for years.
(this is before comic shops- I had to check flea-markets)
FINALLY found it for THREE BUCKS! A king's ransom! Comics being 40 cents at the time. Didn't matter, I found it.

MTU was never a consistent read for me. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Not something I read all the time.

I read the book sporadically. I have to agree that the Spider-Man/Torch/Sons of the Tiger story was good, and Mantlo seemed to have fun with his time travel and Wraith multi-parters. He definitely made the book feel like a real continuing series to me.
Loved the art when JB and Dave Hunt worked on the book. I enjoyed Claremont's run even without JB too. After that, the high points maybe got a bit fewer and farther between, but I still remember a lot of enjoyable stories like the Spider-Man King Kull team-up, and a couple of fun Annuals written by (I believe) Roger Stern and Frank Miller. The Spider-Man/Iron Man story with Blacklash by Tony Isabella is a great single issue story.

Anyone remember the double-sized 100th issue? Claremont/Miller goodness on the main story and our Host doing the backup with a great Ororo story.

My first MTU's were #14 w/Namor & #15 w/ Ghost Rider ! I also have fond memories of #39-40 w/Human Torch/Sons of the Tiger and the "Time Travel" arc w/Scarlet Witch, Vision, Dr. Doom, MoonDragon, Killraven, Deathlok !
I enjoyed Marvel-Two-In-One with the Thing more than MTU with Spider-Man. Some faves are Ben w/Cap, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doc Strange & Valkyrie !
Addendum: MTU - JB's Warlock !

Spider-man/Red Sonja might be the best issue of that run.
Last I checked, the vultures were milking out a whole series out of that...
Not a series, but a five issue mini series from Dynamite. They produce the
Red Sonja monthly title. I don't think it's "milking" the story at all. It's a
pretty decent read.
++++
Take your word for it, Matt. In general, I dislike these revivals.

Love TEAM-UP. The first issue of the Spider-Man/Human Torch/Ms. Marvel tale with the Super Skrull was my first issue (# 60? # 61?), drawn by our host, of course. My first issue of AVENGERS was # 164, also by JB. One day I hope to acquire a page of original art from either issue, or even better a JB commission piece. I've thought about a TEAM-UP montage, or a "cover" shot with Count Nefaria standing in for Superman/Gladiator in an homage to FF # 249 and Superman # 9, with Captain America, Wonder Man, Iron Man, and the Scarlet Witch filling in for the other characters.

Just bought Essential MTU Vol. 1 and 2. Loved the book for the reasons Bruce gave - it was a good way of showcasing lesser-known heroes. Plus, where else could you see team-ups such as Spider-Man/Frankenstein's Monster and Spider-Man/Dr. Doom?
Also liked Marvel Two-In-One, The Brave and The Bold and DC Comics Presents. Books like that provided opportunities for new and exciting stories and never-before-seen team ups.
Personally, I'd love to see a Dr. Strange team-up book. I am intrigued by the character and would love to see how he'd interact whilst teaming with the likes of Blade, Iron Man, Captain America, etc.

My first Byrne comic was MTU #54 with the Hulk and Woodgod. I loved some of the action scenes! That Byrne guy had a really good sense of drama, even if he wasn't as great technically back then as he is today.

First MTU issue I remember reading was MTU #25 [pictured above]. I really enjoy the for 70 or so issues of MTU, with the Spider-Man/Yellowjacket/Wasp story in MTU #59-60 as my favorite.
