I've always been used to thinking of Joe Sinnott primarily as one of Marvel's great inkers, and he is of course, but I was looking at some of the earliest Thor stories recently, and was pleasantly surprised to see that he had both pencilled and inked some of them. I had never (that I recall) seen his work from that era when he wasn't inking Kirby or someone else's work. I like it. It has an almost Silver Age DC atmosphere to it, as if his art would fit in with DC as well as Marvel, with aspects of the artwork that remind me of both Gil Kane and Mike Sekowsky.

He's an excellent artist in general. Check out his website and look at some of the portraits he's done.

There's a reason Joe's inks looked as good as they did. He came from a
solid background in illustration. It shows clearly in his solo work.

I love discovering new artists. This is even cooler, finding an aspect of the work of an artist of whom I was already a fan.

After hundreds of issues as inker does anyone know why Sinnott never once
did even a issue of the Fantastic Four solo? He seemed like a natural go-to
guy for a fill-in.

Just poking around his Web site, I didn't realize he had done this much solo work -- I always thought of him primarily as a top-notch inker. But as others have noted, his pencils look great, too. I own a number of these comics, but never realized he was the artist.
I believe Sinnott still inks the Sunday Spider-Man newspaper comic strip. Definitely an all-time great comic book artist.
