Never been a big Iron Man fan. Most of what I know about the character I have gleaned from Avengers and the 60s cartoon show.

Not a big fan either.
I did enjoy the Iron Man: The Inevitable mini from a couple of years back.

Me too ! I thought the art was very unique, neither realistic, nor cartoony. I don't know what to call it. It was so unusual, even surreal, that I really liked it! And the writing was good too! Casey has a good handle on the "classic" aspects of Marvel characters!

Joe Casey? If so, I have a hard time reconciling this statement with the work of the man who had the Hulk defeated by a snake.

Good suggestions here, but for new Iron Man fans I would also recommend the late-'90s "Heroes Return" issues of Iron Man (renumbered to start with #1, I believe?) -- Kurt Busiek did the stories, and Sean Chen did (most) of the art. Lots of people say that Busiek didn't really "click" on this title, but I think he did a great job of hitting all the high notes for the character regarding past villains, supporting characters, characterization, etc.. Also, Sean Chen's take on updating the classic red-and-gold armor is probably my second-favorite armor (close to being tied with the classic red-and-gold -- how can you NOT love the "horned" faceplate?).
I'd also recommend checking out the Busiek/Perez Avengers stories from the "Heroes Return" era -- I first "met" Iron Man when I started picking up the Avengers as a kid, so plugging-in to the "Heroes Return" Avengers might be a good way for new fans to "get to know" Iron Man (the Iron Man / Tony Stark who is currently appearing in comics is NOT the classic Iron Man, at least as far as I can tell). There is one exception to that -- I've seen a couple of issues of the "Marvel Adventures" Iron Man, and those have looked reasonably good.
EDITED TO ADD:
They DID re-start the numbering on the "Heroes Return" run:
EDIT #2 -- this is the "Chen" armor from the "Heroes Return" era:
I got THAT image from this animated GIF -- nice portrayal of various Iron Man armors over the years, IMO:
I found that image on the comicboards.com Iron Man Message Board, FWIW (http://www.comicboards.com/ironman/).
Sorry for all the images, but this thread was just begging for some good Iron Man images.

I'm not one of those people. "Armor guys" are a tough sell for me (in solo books, at least), but Busiek's run is almost certainly the longest run of an "armor guy" book that I've followed.

I'm a fan, too, Todd -- I had been something of a long-time Iron Man fan by the time the Busiek run came along, but I found it to be very, VERY enjoyable (every bit as enjoyable as any run I had previously read, including any of the Micheline/Layton runs). Great run to read if you want to "get to know" Iron Man, IMO.

Haven't read that one Todd. I was thinking of Avengers Earth's Mightiest Hereos and Iron Man Inevitable !
