Hello,

the new movie has really piqued my interest in Iron Man.  Would anyone care to point me in the proper direction as to storylines or issues to start with?

Any help greatly appreciated.

My favorite story that's been collected is The Armor Wars, reprinting Iron
Man #225-232. Tony Stark's technology has been stolen and villains are
using it to commit evil deeds, so Iron Man vows to take down everyone
who's making use of his tech, no matter the cost.

Marvel is producing some classic Iron Man trades in preparation for the movie.

A great place to start is the just released The Many Armors of Iron Man TPB. Which has a variety of Iron Man stories from all over his history.

Also Demon in a Bottle and the Armor Wars stories are collected as TPBs. I recommend instocktrades.com through their site or their eBay store.

In a couple weeks the Iron Man vs. Dr. Doom Hardcover is coming out and that is a sweet story.

I've never read much Iron Man. Just some scattered issues over the years, as well as JB's stories. I'm expecting Essential Iron Man volume 1 to be waiting for me tomorrow. I ordered it recently, having finally decided to check out some of the early stuff.

Can't go wrong with any of the Micheline/John Romita Jr./Layton stuff. In particular, I love the Iron Man/Dr. Doom storyline in #149-150.

Indeed.

The current series will formally adopt the unofficial title that's been on the covers for a while now: Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., while a second series, The Invincible Iron Man will launch.

I took some civil war trades out of the library and found them largely unreadable (I enjoyed the Runaways/ Young Avengers crossover, though) One whole issue dealing with CAP and Iron Man had a few nice parts, but overall it just seemed dumb. Especially the Tony Stark, director of SHIELD angle.

While we're on the subject of the Iron Man movie, I'll go ahead and mention
that I got to interview Jon Favreau as part of a roundtable press discussion
at WonderCon a couple of weeks ago.

Click here if you want to read it.

(I'm linking to Page 3 of the article, which has the Favreau interview, but feel
free to check out the rest of the article, if you're so inclined).

Me neither.  I got the DVD-ROM a few days ago and I'm wondering if I should have.  There's not a lot there that really grabs me, besides the JB/JR Jr. run, which I already have.  I'll check out the early issues as well as the story Andrew recommended, but I'm not really a fan of Layton's artwork, either when he inks JR Jr. or when he does the whole thing himself.  Also, the 90s issues look mostly awful.
