I generally admire an artist who clearly knows everything that could go into his art, and is capable of rendering it if he could,  then simplifies down to the essentials. The aforementioned Jaime Hernandez is the perfect example.

I once read something about Sergio Aragones. He told of how he used to draw trains in very realistic detail, then draw them again and again, subtracting a  bit more detail every time, until he learned how much he had to leave to still make them recognizable in the drawings.

Yeah. I came across this by chance of reading an article and ordered the
movie and book. Really good stuff from a group of NYU students.

Toth is great. His art always (cartoons for what I really knew of him)
appealed to me.

Almost similar to what my instructors told me. Look at whatever I am
drawing as simple shapes and build and/or subtract as needed.
