BTW: I haven't been able to spend a lot of time reading through the "What's
in your sketchbook" thread here at JBF. Have you posted your own stuff
there?

Hey Dan -

No not yet. I was thinking about it recently.

I have always liked John Romita Jr.'s work.   It was always good but he has
developed into a style more his own. Actually his style like Frank Miller's was
more "real" and have become more stylized and cartoony.

Actually John's work is more stylized now than ever.

I took a look at a Iron Man trade paperback and some early 70's/80's
Spider-Man work and he definitely grew visually as well as becoming a great
storyteller.

I rank him and Paul Smith, who I believe started out as a storyboard artist,
as tops in visual storytelling.

For some, today, Mr. Byrne's art is considered a bit cartoony.
For my generation (started to read in early 70's) his work was more "realistic" than average.

I find equal pleasure reading comics from S. Aragones, N. Adams, S. Ditko, A. Davis, J. Kirby,
or B. Hitch.
As for super-heroes, I enjoy a wide range of style too, so frankly, who cares as long as the
drawing style fits the story and your taste?

Another fascinating artist is Ladronn.  I recently picked up Thor Annual 2000 which has an amazing back up story on Thanos & Mangog by Ladronn.  And there's an article about him over at CBR:

I would enjoy seeing more of Ladronn's work, it is very fascinating !  It seems neither cartoony, nor realistic, but "other wordly" !
