I caused a commotion in the LCS the other night when I said I'd rather see an Adam Hughes cover than an Alex Ross cover.

Ross's "realism" has started to get too realistic. His people look too real, and this subtracts from the heroic dynamics of what should be on a good superhero cover.

I read Marvels for the first time this Christmas!  It was very enjoyable!  That was my first experience reading/viewing Ross.  I can see where one might think it is "too real".  I still like Sinnott, Kirby, Ditko, Starlin, Buscema and Byrne much more than Ross !

Ross's art in Marvels and in Kingdom Come was superb, but more recently his characters, especially on al the covers he's been doing, have started to look too real.

Love that Jusko JLA, Eric. Where's it from?

Eric Smearman -

Hey Eric, I found it online and it said that it is art from an upcoming jogsaw
puzzle.

Alex Ross' art is great. I think that the thing that makes it become less
dynamic over time is that it is based within the "real world."

Seeing his art for the first time, like in Marvels, there is a great wowo factor
because that is the first time I had seen something rooted in real time
reality.

Now that it seems that I am familiar with it, although the work is still very
much superb, I want something not based in real world reality.

Alex is a great artist.

Eric -

Unfortunately, the old cliche, "Familiarity breeds contempt" strikes again !

Note: several people have stated at JBF and elsewhere that everyone's comic should be their first comic, i.e. that all comics should be readable the first time.  However, wouldn't it be great if every time we read a comic, it was like reading it for the first time, even if we had already read it several times !  Not only would we never get tired of it (and some comics are this way), but each read would be a brand new and positive experience every time !  Or to say it another way, we get the same "WOW" factor every time (almost like selective amnesia) !

(Pause) I can just hear Ricardo Matalban saying, "Welcome to Fantasy Island" !

I found that in Justice, Alex Ross’ art was less realistic, more dynamic than in his earlier work. I think he’s loosening up and drawing less from photo or live-model reference. (Edit: I mean that in a good way.)

When did Frank Miller decide that everyone had to have big huge clod-hopper feet?

Justice was  penciled by Dougie Braithwaite, and then painted by Alex Ross. That probably accounts for the more dynamic aspect of his work on that project.

I have always liked Mike Zeck handling the non-super hero characters.

I also liked his collaborators. I believe the artist who air brushed his 80's
Punisher covers last name was Zimmerman.

I like that the airbrush does not take away from Zeck's pencils. Also the
colorist on his Master Of Kung Fu work definitely knew how to push back
and/or forward depth of field by usage of color.
