Eric -
I am wondering if Tom Grindberg was influenced by Mike Mignola? TG worked on Warlock and Secret Defenders in the 90's. He appears (to me anyway) to have a similar style to Mignola!

Thanks for mentioning his name. I just Googled him.
I see an influence of Mike Mignola, Berni Wrightson and definitely Frank
Frazetta in his work. He has a little bit of them all.
Thanks again for the heads up, Dan!

Cool Mignola images. Is that a Sand Raider? I especially like the X-Force one as compared to the Liefeld one.
Some more Mignola--

Hey, Paul. You got it. That is a Tusken Raider from Star Wars.

The difference between the Liefeld X-Force and the Mignola X-Force is like night and day. This is why having a good artist is so important.
I’ve heard complaints that Liefeld tries to get out of drawing feet by hiding them behind clouds or rocks; that’s true of his X-Force drawing above. OTOH, Mignola hid the feet of all but one character, too. Maybe he did it as a nod to Liefeld? :-)
But actually, what bothers me more about the Liefeld style is the mouth-breathing. Every other character seems to be going “Hhhaaahhh” as they stand there. I guess it’s meant to indicate breathing hard from exertion, but it’s just distracting. The only time I’ve ever seen anyone make that face in real life was in the movie Goldeneye, when Xenia Onatopp was firing a machine gun into a room full of people, and I think in that case it was implying that the killing was sexually arousing her.

Mignola is god.... Too bad is putting down the pencils for now, or at least I heard. What amazes me more about his art, besides all the shadow treatment he gives it and that works so well in Hellboy and related issues, is the rhythm he gives to the story... he sometimes even inserts all-black panels just to give you a breather or finish up a scene... incredible! He's the best storyteller in the bizz in my opinion.

Mignola is, bar none, the master of using heavy blacks. He dropped a lot of fine detail for dynamic forms and the use of stark lighting to define shapes. A great example of someone who refined his work down to a point where he is conveying more with less.

I agree. He communicates with words and most definitely with pictures.
An altogether artist.
