I don't care if people consider me an ass for being on this case. It makes me ill seeing this promoted or tolerated. In Japan, they cancel your series if you're caught, an appology is issued to the readers, some plagiarists even get their whole catalogue deleted. In America, you get promoted to Astonishing X-Men and the fans are a "k-board mob of stoopid".

"Swiper, no swiping."

Awesome "Dora" reference!

Feh, the artists in question don't particularly care, and neither should readers. If one doesn't like an accused Swiper, just don't buy the book. That might get a message across...

Wow Martin,
Nothing like taking a potshot at another Forum member in your sig to really show how petty you can be. Yes I said that, on another forum, when the discussion turned to your personal attacks on another professional artist over at CBR in the David Mack thread there. I was surprised at how nasty you were to him for just stating his opinion on the Mack situation. I don't agree with his opinion, in fact I agree that Mack's swiping should be exposed, and when it is, the publishers of his work should do something about it.
That's the reason I started the Swipe of the Week page back when I was a retailer. I felt that plagiarism in any form is unacceptable in any form. I took some flak back in those days for it then. Jeph Loeb thought I should be banished to the Phantom Zone for what I did. But where I draw the line is personal attacks against someone just because they disagree with you.
Your personal attacks on Mike's drawing ability made me seek out his work to see what you were criticizing. What I found was an artist who has IMO a very nice style. Very much a synthesis of Mark Silvestri and Gary Frank.

Chris and Martin. Let's not bring a feud you are having at another message board into this one. It would be nice if Martin changed his sig line. You both seem like good folks, lets just try and keep it less personal.

Well I for one had no idea they were swipes even after I'd bought and read the book. It was only the thread on newsarama that alerted me.

It should not be the reader's responsibility to police whether or not this swiping garbage is taking place. I would apply the same logic here as I do to lateness of books. I hate late books. If I'm aware that a series is consistently late, I will stop supporting it.....but it should not fall upon my shoulders to have to religiously check the scheduled release dates to make sure I can avoid an offending title. That is up to the editors and publishers.

Swiping, like lateness, should have no place in comics art. It's a slap in the face to artists who actually do their JOBS.

JMS gave us a story in Amazing Spider-Man about a tailor who caters to superheroes and villains. Clever? I thought so, too - when I first read the story "Neutral Ground" in the paperback book The Further Adventures of Batman back in 1989. I looked to see if maybe JMS had penned that story. He didn't.

Try all the way back to the 1960s when Gardner Fox (or was it John Broome?) did that first with a tailor who outfitted Flash's Rogues Gallery.  The tailor appeared in several stories.

I'm not a fan of swiping, but it doesn't offend me. I find it a shame that the artists in question are so lazy, and I wish they'd just draw their butts off and forget replicating work they admire.

Thing is, if one isn't aware of swiping taking place, what's the difference? Personally, I wouldn't suddenly dislike a book I originally liked because I found out the artist likes tracing a bit too much. Ignorance is bliss <g>....

Actually, if you read the thread over at Newsarama, you'll see that Adam Hughes' agent mentions that they do have issues with the swipes.

And it certainly puts Marvel in a precarious legal position since many of the swipes come from comics published by their competitors.

If I was the boss at Marvel David Mack and Greg Land would both be out on their butts.

Consider Liefeld's Ronin swipe.  I'd not read Ronin at the time.  While I didn't think much of Liefeld the artist, I thought Liefeld the creator had done a pretty badass job in his characterization of Shatterstar, a character who would stab himself to get at someone behind him.

Turns out, nope.

And I DID hate that issue after I found out.  I felt betrayed as a reader.

edit: typo
