That does help a lot -- thanks guys. The lines match up a little too closely here.

Thats what I thought - makes me wonder why some artists bother. Surely by the time youve ploughed thru a dozen comicbooks looking for a shot to rob, you could have just drawn it yourself?

I know, Im old fashioned like that.

 QUOTE:
At least he modified it substantially in the final rendering. I have moderately less problem with that.

However, I think the change to the Moon Knight pose was necessary, structurally speaking, because Moon Knight isn't situated on the same objects as Batman is.  Even in the inked piece, it's hard to tell where MK's right leg rests and his knee is still too high.  Also, Moon Knight isn't taking something off his belt as Batman is.  If left alone, the MK swipe might give the impression that he's perhaps leaping over the rail and he's in midleap, but the fact that the drawer adjusted the drawing suggests the intent was otherwise, as well as the fact that the left leg is at rest (oh, how I do go on).

Regarding the overimposition above, wow, I didn't think it would match that closely.  It's practically a tracing.

How timely!  CBR has just posted a story about the 1990 swiping of Amy Grant's photo for a cover of Doctor Strange.  So, is it swiping if you copy a photo?  YES, unless you took the photo, or got the photographer's written permission:

Yup.  In fact, I believe Marvel had to send out a notice some time ago to its artists to be wary of copyrighted photos.

Addendum: not sure what the point of copying Amy Grant's face was there.  Any thoughts on that?

"I went back and looked at the Maroto stuff again, and realized it was wall to wall swipes. A Kubert figure here, a Neal Adams there. Here's an Alan Weiss!"

Going through a Maroto story looking for the swipes can actually be kind of fun in a perverse way. There's so many of them it becomes a sort of easter egg hunt. My "favorite" was a single panel in a Warren story where he'd swiped an entire cover painting by Sanjulian, managing to use every single figure Sanjulian had painted.

Bah, I think this is shameful. Anyone should be embarassed to publish and create this. I have to wonder how proud of themselves they feel when someone praises their work as ground breaking and unique.

Sorry I got carried away and am editing this.

Martin: Kind of over the line, don't you think?

Martin, I think calling someone a "swiper" is enough. We're discussing the practice here and where we feel the boundaries should lie. Not calling them names. I think the great tragedy with people like Mack and the example by Perkins is that they don't seem to be bad artists and this type of swiping should really be beneath their professional standards at this point.

Ahaha Paulo, I hadn't noticed his right foot resting on absolutely nothing either. One thing's for sure, Mike Perkins  is horrible. 4 thumbs down.

His art isn't quite my cup of tea, but I'm not sure I would rate Perkins as horrible; though that swipe is ill-advised at best, for reasons already stated.

I also just noticed the Kabuki tatoo you posted is the second panel in that Davis sequence. I'm not one to use the word rape gratuitiously but it's practically is comics rape. Wow wow just wow.

Rape might be a bit harsh, though this wouldn't be the first I've seen it used casually.   Some of these swipes are so blatant it's hard not to draw some sort of conclusion.  I think I'd be on the fence that separates feeling affonted and feeling flattered if I were ever swiped.

Well I don't feel so. Someone gets paid good money to sell artwork which isn't theirs, for well over 10 years straight, acquires a sterling reputation as a grand artist. Same person keeps the charade going. That's a con artist and a fraud. People have been shamed out of the industry for much less.
