While Erik has expressed affection and admiration for JB's work, he's also
been critical and I seem to recall JB and he have a history
Ok… Spare the rod and spoil the child and let's move on.

I'm not a fan of Godland or even really know of this guy's artwork but I think
comparing swipes and his open nod/inspiration of Kirby is apples and
oranges.
••
Which is probably why I haven't been making that comparison. Please read
what I have written more closely.

Duncan Fegredo's style appeals to me more than Mignola's, so I hope he
continues doing work that looks like... well... his own work!

I do hope Mignola doesn't stop drawing comics... he one of the very few who can still make me move to a near comic shop eagerly looking for his art... but that's another thread...

There's another Mike Mignola imitator out there...at least IMO.
I'm a BIG fan of F. Paul Wilson's works & I recently acquired a comic book adaptation of The Keep (which was scripted by F. Paul Wilson himself!).
The artwork is by Matthew Smith. I just wish I had some images of his work to share so you guys could make a comparison.
Anyway, as much as I enjoyed the STORY aspect of the adaptation, the Mignola-style wasn't my cuppa.

I feel I should add REAL Mike Mignola IS Great stuff...IMO! Sorry to hear he may be stepping away from the drawing board, even for a little while.

Well, he's stopped drawing Hellboy comics. I don't know if that means he's stopped drawing comics altogether.

Late to the party, but... A swipe is when an artist cannibalizes another artist's work and tries to pass it off as his own original work. Redrawing exact scenes from other artist's work in a flashback (as John often did in Fourth World ) is not a swipe OR an homage... it's a post modern approach to showing pertinent scenes that need to be presented in the context of a story. Anyone who has any sense knows that John Byrne can redraw the scene from any varying angle he choses to (his cover re imaginings are excellent examples) but by recreating the original image he is playing on the long time reader's knowledge of past issues and reinforcing the canonical significance of that continuity.
Also, I would hazard to guess that referencing a Kirby panel and duplicating the composition takes John more time than if he were to use his own interpretation of the scene.
