Seems to me like the guy was looking for something to get offended about. If he wanted something specific, he could've said it. The rest of world aren't mind-readers. Obviously, other than the nega-bands he loved the piece so much that he went to the length of getting another artist to copy it.
I've heard of this being done in other design businesses. People will solicit designs etc from a high-priced firm /desginer(or several) , then after they've "viewed' (or copied) those designs and rejected them for being unsuitable (at little cost) they take the copies to cheap contractors or production facilities and get the end product cheaper.
I'm not saying that Ditton did that intentionally, but he ended up with a very cheap JB designed piece. He's lucky that he only got cut from JB's comission list. That guy should be blackballed by every artist out there.
(And I'm not suggesting MAC did anything wrong. For all I know Ditton told him he wanted several versions of the same piece. Some collectors like that.)

I know several collectors who like to get different inkers to work on overlay over the same pencils -- but none who hand an artist a low-res print-out and say "trace this".

This is a great commission. I'm stunned it was rejected.
I could not have imagined ordering a commission, rejecting it, ordering a
recreation of it by a third-party, making that recreation public and not
ever paying for the original!
I would not knowingly recreate a piece for someone who had ordered it
from, but never paid, the original artist.
I don't know the Mar-Vell character history or chronology at all. Is he
wearing nega-bands on the Jim Starlin cover?
(Edit: Finally 100 posts!)

THIS was the other declined piece, btw. Not entirely clear on why, but I didn't push it.

Talking about nonsense ... Why would anyone refuse this SHE-HULK collage ??? I know I'm going to trace it and add the missing pointed nipples.

From Pat:

What skill is involved in tracing? I was a kindergarten prodigy and didn't even know it.

It blows me away that the Marvel piece would have been refused. It is a gorgeous piece and I felt more than a twinge of jealousy when I initially saw it.

So there you have it. As you can see, I very specifically indicated I would prefer to do the Neal Adams version of the character *****
In my field, we have to do confirmations on a regular basis so customers understand what it is we are providing. I'm sorry, but I find it bad customer service on Jim's part to use one reference with a customer and then hand them something else. He should have given the customer a different link to the correct version to be drawn.

Brian,
It seems to me the issue isn't so much with the rejection of the piece but with the shenanigans he cooked up after the fact.

Where does it say Jim provided the reference to the customer? The reference was provided by the customer, as confirmation of the costume design to be used. And that's what I drew, having previously specified I preferred the Neal Adams interpretation of that costume.

That refused She-Hulk commission... it's like five in one. To reject that is boggling!
