Back when Dazzler #1 came out, I picked it up without hesitation, solely on the strength of the Bob Larkin cover. Painted comic book covers weren't as common as they are today, so I was fairly blown away by the remarkable realism of the cover. I wasn't so enchanted by the story, mind you, so I never bought past that first issue.

It was a great coveron that first issue.
Bill S. also did a number of great Dazzler covers.
Didn't Jackson (Butch) Guice also do some later work on the title?

As far as I recall, JB drew her one more time during his first FF run. It must have been odd finding yourself drawing a character imposed on you on two of your books!
I am not that negative towards her. I think her power was really cool and in contrast what John says, I think it was pretty funny that she sucked out sound and turned it into light. Quite apropriate for a comic book character!
I also liked her X-Men days (pairing with Longshot) in the blue costume.
It would have been fun to see her in the same team as Banshee (it would make for some cool team-work scenes) and even funnier to see her set against Black Bolt!!!
Oh, Cool Commission, btw. It's classic Dazzler, Classic Byrne.

Funny story about that first issue. I had the opportunity to get to meet both Tom DeFalco and John Romita Jr at a convention back in 2000. When these circumstances happen, I try to find an issue that I liked that both creators worked on to have signed. Well, the only thing I could find in my collection that both DeFalco and JRjr did was Dazzler #1, so even though it wasn't a favorite, I took it anyway. I'm assuming it wasn't a favorite for the two of them, either, because despite being at opposite ends of the convention hall, they both had similar surprised looks on their faces when I laid the book down in front of them. DeFalco did express some regret that he's never got to work with JRjr that much.

Hey, JB! Thanks for the insight into how Dazzler was shoehorned into that storyline.
The commission is really great, too. A fine example of making lemonade out of a lemon character.

Dazzling piece, JB.
Apropos of the behind the scenes for the Dazzler debut in Uncanny X-Men (which I vaguely recall having seen somewhere in here on earlier occasion), I must say that I am all the more impressed by the end result JB and Claremont achieved, knowing that they didn't even wanted it to be a three parter, nor to have that character added. It's a story I've read more than once, and the way it works seamlessly and keeps me hooks doesn't in the least give away what was going on behind the scenes. I guess that is professional storytelling for you.

Working in comics is often a case of being handed a crate of lemons and told to make lemonade. Unfortunately, it is also often a case of being handed a crate of grapefruit and told to make lemonade!

Well, understanding more and more of that from seeing some behind the scenes stories, I am continually all the more impressed about the fact that certain comics, not only have come out at all, but been so good that they have. I think it says something about the old school talent that it seems that more often than not they pulled that impossible grapefruit lemonade off.
And while I certainly can sympathize with the frustration involved in that bit of the process, I'm all the more impressed by the end result.
As always, thanks for sharing these kinds of stories, JB.

Wasn't JR Jr. the designer of the character? He was the first to draw her in her new book, anyway.

Here's the Dazzler photo cover, issue #21:
It was very cool at the time, but I much prefer JB's depiction...
